Microsoft opens free registrations for Build 2020 - Engadget

Build 2020
Microsoft

In addition to hosting its annual Build developer conference online, Microsoft now plans to make the event free to attend. On Thursday, the company’s Scott Hanselman announced the conference will start on May 19th at 8AM PT / 11AM ET and feature 48-hours of programming, including sessions, talks and demos hosted by the company’s engineers. Anyone can register to attend Build 2020 starting today free of charge.

The event will kick off with a keynote address from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. According to The Verge’s Tom Warren, Panos Panay, the company’s outspoken chief product officer, will also make an appearance at Build 2020. The company will host workshops on Twitch, and attendees will have access to Microsoft employees if they need to ask a question or troubleshoot one of their projects. Developers may also get goodies in the mail as the registration process asks individuals to provide their shipping information. In past years, Build had a $2,395 entry fee.

“It’s not the Build we thought it would be, but it’s gonna be special,” said Hanselman. “We can’t wait to bring together our community of developers to learn, connect and code together.”

Like so many other things, the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the annual developer conference circuit, in some instances even leading to outright cancellations. Google, for example, had planned to host its annual I/O conference online. However, in March the company, citing California’s shelter in place order, canceled the digital component as well. At the moment, all signs point to Apple planning to go forward with an online-only WWDC, but that could change too.

Anderson Cooper is a father; gives infant son a special name - The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Anderson Cooper is a father, a milestone the CNN anchor says for a while he didn’t believe would ever happen.

Cooper announced the birth of his son, Wyatt, Thursday evening on his show and in a lengthy Instagram post. His son was born on Monday via a surrogate, the newsman said, and is named after his father who died when Cooper was 10.

“On Monday, I became a father. I’ve never actually said that before out loud, and it still kind of astonishes me,” Cooper said on his show, “AC360.”

The anchor said he felt it was important, amid stories about those who are suffering and dying during the coronavirus pandemic, to “hold on to moments of joy.”

The segment included several photos of the newborn.

“As a gay kid, I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I’m grateful for all those who have paved the way, and for the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in my son’s birth,” Cooper wrote on Instagram. “Most of all, I am grateful to a remarkable surrogate who carried Wyatt, and watched over him lovingly, and tenderly, and gave birth to him.”

Cooper, 52, said he regretted that his parents and brother were not alive to meet his son. Cooper’s mother, Gloria Vanderbilt died in July at 95.

The Instagram post included a photo of Cooper feeding his son a bottle. The baby’s middle name, Morgan, is also a family name. It was a name his parents considered for Cooper, according to a list he recently found.

Apple releases new software to unlock iPhone without face ID, while wearing coronavirus mask - Fox News

Get all the latest news on coronavirus and more delivered daily to your inbox. Sign up here.

Apple is testing a new version of software for iPhones that will enable users to unlock their phones without Face ID and while wearing a mask.

Currently, users have complained that when they use a mask or covering for their face to protect against coronavirus -- particularly when running errands or going outside -- they are unable to unlock their phones using Face ID.

APPLE AND GOOGLE-BACKED COVID-19 CONTACT TRACING APPS ARE COMING: Q&A

When your face is covered, the iPhone won't be able to unlock and will vibrate and eventually timeout, then allowing you the option to swipe up to enter your passcode instead.

Now with the launch of iOS 13.5 beta 3 code, users can opt to swipe up to activate their passcode without first having to wait for an error when Face ID doesn't register.

Apple hasn't yet said when the new feature will launch, but it is one of two new fixes aimed at addressing the coronavirus pandemic.

The iOS 13.5 beta 3 will also introduce new software necessary for applications to develop contact tracing, which will alert people if they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Andy Cohensaid it best—this baby news couldn't have come at a better time.

On Thursday night, Anderson Cooper announced the birth of his newborn son, Wyatt Cooper Morgan, on social media and his CNN show AC360. The surprise was met with an outpouring of support from Cooper's famous friends and colleagues, but nothing was as heartwarming as Cohen's reaction.

"'New life, new hope!'" the Bravo star gushed on Instagram. "Wyatt Cooper, you couldn't have come at a better time! I know a friend who can't wait to meet you!"

Of course, Andy is talking about his own son, Benjamin Allen Cohen, who he welcomed in Feb. 2019 via surrogate. It's safe to say Wyatt's arrival marks the birth of a beautiful friendship between the first-time dads and their sons.

Anderson, 52, also paid special tribute to baby Wyatt's surrogate, writing on Instagram, "Most of all, I am grateful to a remarkable surrogate who carried Wyatt, and watched over him lovingly, and tenderly, and gave birth to him. It is an extraordinary blessing—what she, and all surrogates give to families who can't have children.

Broadway Actor Nick Cordero Has “Holes In His Lungs” From COVID Battle - Deadline

Just days after Broadway actor Nick Cordero seemed to be on the mend, his wife Amanda Kloots posted a heartbreaking Instagram update.

On her Instagram stories Kloots, with whom Cordero has a 10-month-old son, said that while Cordero’s CT scans showed he was “clear of internal bleeding,” his lungs had become “severely damaged” and “look almost like he’s been a smoker for 50 years.”

“They’re that damaged,” she went on. “There are holes in his lungs where obviously you don’t want holes to be. So this kind of was found because his oxygen count went down and so they kind of went down and deep into the lungs…It wasn’t as bad as the couple of days before, but they had to clean out his lungs again.”

Kloots said that doctors will soon perform a different scan of Cordero’s lungs to “get a better picture of what’s going on.” They want to “find out from this culture what the fungus is so that they can specifically give the right medication to attack that fungus.”

All this comes after Kloots said this weekend that Cordero was likely in recovery after two negative coronavirus tests.

Previously, doctors had amputated Cordero’s right leg as a result of COVID-19-related complications and installed a temporary pacemaker to control his irregular heartbeat.

Cordero, who starred in Broadway’s Waitress and Bullets Over Broadway and on TV in Blue Bloods, has been sedated for several weeks in the ICU at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Thursday morning, Kloots put on a brave face in an interview with CBS This Morning‘s Gayle King.

Kloots later opened up more in her Instagram story.

“Sometimes when I hear news like I heard yesterday, I’m just like, ‘Really? Like really?'” she said. “It’s almost like we can’t catch a break over here and that is hard to deal with, is very hard to deal with. I have definitely let myself cry. I definitely let myself scream and rage and just be frustrated,”

But she was ultimately hopeful when recalling a conversation with a doctor.

“The doctor that I was speaking to is absolutely wonderful and has the best bedside manner,” Kloots continued. “So the doctor told me that if Nick was in his seventies, we’d be having a different conversation. He’s 41, and he’s been fighting. He’s been fighting really hard. We know he’s literally been thrown every curve ball that he could be thrown.

“He [the doctor] told me that if it was his his brother in there that he would not be giving up hope,” said Kloots. “So I’m not giving up hope. I’m not giving up hope.”

Anderson Cooper announces birth of son Wyatt live on CNN - Page Six

Anderson Cooper is a dad.

The longtime CNN host announced the birth of baby son Wyatt Morgan Cooper via surrogate on Thursday night as he posted a photo on Instagram: “As a gay kid, I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I’m grateful for all those who have paved the way, and for the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in my son’s birth.”

He added: “He is sweet, and soft, and healthy and I am beyond happy.”

Cooper, 52, told viewers about his son at the end of Thursday’s televised weekly global town hall on the coronavirus pandemic.

“It has been a difficult time in all of our lives, and there are certainly many hard days ahead,” Cooper said. “It is, I think, especially important in times of trouble to hold on to moments of joy and happiness. Even as we mourn the loss of loved ones, we are also blessed with new life. New love.”

He then told viewers: “On Monday, I became a father. I’ve never actually said that before, and it still kind of astonishes me. I am a dad. I have a son.”

He said he is “eternally grateful to a remarkable surrogate who carried Wyatt, watched over him lovingly, tenderly, and gave birth to him.”

Continuing his story on Instagram, Cooper added: “It is an extraordinary blessing – what she, and all surrogates give to families who can’t have children. My surrogate has a beautiful family of her own, a wonderfully supportive husband, and kids, and I am incredibly thankful for all the support they have given Wyatt and me. My family is blessed to have this family in our lives.”

The newborn is named after Cooper’s father who died when he was 10. “I hope I can be as good a dad as he was,” he said.

His son’s middle name, Morgan, is a name from the family tree of his mother Gloria Vanderbilt, who died last year.

“I do wish my mom and dad and my brother, Carter were alive to meet Wyatt,” Cooper said, “but I like to believe they can see him. I imagine them all together, arms around each other, smiling and laughing … happy to know that their love is alive in me and in Wyatt … and that our family continues. New life. New love.”

Cooper’s best friend Andy Cohen also has a baby son Ben via surrogate and Cooper, who is currently single, has said: “He’s the greatest kid, and it’s such a joy to see him every day.”

Cooper’s BFF Cohen quickly posted a photo of Wyatt on Instagram, writing: “‘New life, new hope’. Wyatt Cooper, you couldn’t have come at a better time. I know a friend who can’t wait to meet you!.”

iPhone 12 prices just leaked – and it's mostly good news - TechRadar India

There’s no shortage of iPhone 12 leaks, and the latest includes key specs and prices for all four of Apple's rumored models. And while price is one aspect of iPhones that we’re not always a fan of, it’s mostly good news here if this leak is right.

That’s because, according to Jon Prosser (an Apple leaker with a good track record), the iPhone 12 Pro price will start at $999 and iPhone 12 Pro Max at $1,099, which are the exact same prices as the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

As such we can speculate that prices elsewhere will be the same too, which would mean £1,049 / AU$1,749 for the iPhone 12 Pro and £1,149 / AU$1,899 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple keeping the prices the same is about the best you could hope for – especially considering the improved specs and features, and supposedly bigger screens.

According to this leak (and many others) the iPhone 12 Pro will have a 6.1-inch OLED screen, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max will have a 6.7-inch OLED display, up from 5.8 inches and 6.5 inches for the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max respectively.

Both new phones also apparently come with 5G, along with three rear cameras and a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanner – which again is stuff that we’ve heard before.

The reason we say the prices are ‘mostly’ good news is that the standard iPhone 12 looks set to cost more than the iPhone 11. To get the same 6.1-inch screen you’ll apparently be paying $749, which is $50 more than the iPhone 11.

Having said that, Apple is also supposedly introducing a new 5.4-inch model at the bottom of the range, and this will reportedly only cost $649, or $50 less than the iPhone 11. Both of these phones also apparently have an OLED screen, 5G support and two rear cameras.

As ever, we’d take these claims with a pinch of salt, but other than the prices this isn’t the first time we’re hearing any of this, and the price leak come from sources that accurately foresaw the iPhone SE (2020) release date, so they might well be right.

Broadway star Nick Cordero has holes in 'severely damaged' lungs due to coronavirus - Page Six

The wife of Broadway star Nick Cordero has revealed there are holes in his “severely damaged” lungs amid his ongoing battle with coronavirus.

Amanda Kloots — who has spent weeks rallying support for her husband — said Thursday that her husband has “been thrown every curve ball he could be thrown” as she detailed via a video on Instagram, “Yesterday was a very hard day. He started off with low blood count. Luckily, Nick’s CT scans came back clear of internal bleeding as of now, so that was a huge blessing.

“However, we did learn that due to COVID, Nick’s lungs are severely damaged to look almost like he’s been a smoker for 50 years, they said, they’re that damaged. There are holes in his lungs where obviously you don’t want holes to be.”

Nick Cordero and his wife Amanda Kloots

The fitness trainer and mom to their baby son, Elvis, said doctors discovered this when Cordero’s oxygen count went down and they cleaned out his lungs.

She said the plan now is to scan his lungs with ink and take cultures, so they can put him on the right medication.

Cordero has already had his leg amputated and his friends and family are waiting for him to regain consciousness.

Kloots added that her husband’s doctor is “absolutely wonderful,” saying, “He told me if Nick was in his 70s, we’d be having a different conversation. He’s 41, he’s been fighting really hard.

“He told me if it was his brother in there, he would not be giving up hope, so I’m not giving up hope. Obviously, it was super scary news to hear.”

She said they are desperate to get him healthy and stable so they can give him a tracheostomy and get him off his ventilator, but have to work out his lung issues first.

"It has been a difficult time in all of our lives, and there are certainly many hard days ahead," Cooper said. "It is, I think, especially important in these times of trouble to try to hold on to moments of joy and moments of happiness. The news came as a big surprise to CNN viewers, as Cooper had not spoken publicly about his plans to have a baby.
Cooper's father, who died when he was 10 years old, was named Wyatt. Now Cooper is passing the name to a new generation. "I hope I can be as good a dad as he was," he said during the announcement.
His son's middle name, Morgan, is a name from the family tree of his mother Gloria Vanderbilt. She died last year.

How this startup built and exited to Twitter in 1,219 days - TechCrunch

By the summer of 2016, Marie Outtier had spent eight years as a consultant advising media agencies and martech companies on marketing growth strategy.

Pierre-Jean “PJ” Camillieri started as a music software engineer before joining one of Apple’s consumer electronics divisions. Inspired by Siri, he left to start Timista, a smart lifestyle assistant.

When the two joined forces to co-found Aiden.ai, the combination was potent — one was a consummate marketer, the other, a specialist in machine learning. Their goal: create an AI-driven marketing analyst that offered actionable advice in real time.

Humans who manage ad campaigns must analyze vast amounts of numbers, but Outtier and Camillieri envisioned a tool that could make optimization recommendations in real time. Analytics are vast and unwieldy, so theirs was a no-brainer proposition with a market crying out for solutions.

The company’s first office was at Bloom Space in Gower Street, London. It was just a handful of hot desks and a nearby sofa shared with four other startups. That summer, they began in earnest to build the company. A few months later, they had a huge opportunity when the still 100% bootstrapped company was selected for Techcrunch Disrupt’s Startup Battlefield competition.

Interviewed by TechCrunch, they explained their proposition: Marketers wanted to know where a digital marketing campaign was getting the most traction: Twitter or Facebook. You might need to check several dashboards across multiple accounts, plus Google analytics to compile the data — and even if you conclude that one platform is outperforming the other, that might change next week as users shift attention to Instagram, potentially wasting 60% of ad spend.

Aiden was intended to feel like just another co-worker, relying on natural language processing to make the exchange feel chatty and comfortable. It queried data from multiple dashboards and quickly compiled it into flash charts, making it easy to find and digest.

Eventually, instead of managing 10 clients, marketing analysts would be able to manage 50 using dynamic predictions as well as visualizations. Aiden incorporated Outtier’s expertise into its algorithms so it could suggest how to tweak a Facebook campaign and anticipate what was going to happen.

Was appearing at Disrupt a significant moment? “It was a big deal for us,” says Outtier. “The exposure gave us ammunition to raise our first round. And being part of the Disrupt Battlefield alumni gave us many meaningful networking and PR opportunities.”

A few weeks later the company had raised a seed round of $750,000. But not without difficulty. By this time Outtier was in the latter stages of pregnancy. Raising money under these circumstances was difficult, but, she says, “it can be done. It’s tougher than ‘normal circumstances.’ It’s a bit like running a marathon, but with a fridge on your back.”
