‘The Masked Singer’ Cuts Another Contestant in ‘Wildcard’ Round: And Grandpa Monster Is… - TheWrap

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer.”)

“The Masked Singer” Season 5 returned Wednesday with an episode featuring Group B’s second performances and the show’s second “Wildcard” round. And just like last week, the night’s surprise contestant came in and managed to steal the slot from an existing competitor. In this case, it was newbie Crab who got more votes than Grandpa Monster, who was thus eliminated from the competition and unmasked at the end of the episode.

Following last Wednesday’s inaugural “Wildcard” round for Group A — which now consists of Russian Doll, Seashell, Robopine (f.k.a. Porcupine) and Orca (who ousted Raccoon) — Group B’s remaining contestants Grandpa Monster, Chameleon, Black Swan and Piglet took the stage again.

They each gave their second performances in front of panelists Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke and Nicole Scherzinger, as well as guest host Niecy Nash (filling in for Nick Cannon, who is recovering from COVID-19).

Once those four were done, the “Wildcard” round began, with crashing contestant Crab making their grand entrance by singing Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

Then it was time for the judges and at-home audience to cast their votes for Wednesday’s top contestant.

The performer who came in last was Grandpa Monster, who sang Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation.” Before Grandpa Monster was unmasked, Thicke guessed the contestant was Johnny Manziel, Scherzinger picked Jake Paul, Jeong said Kevin Hart and McCarthy thought The Miz. Grandpa Monster turned out to be YouTube star Logan Paul.

Read TheWrap’s interview with Paul about his time on “The Masked Singer” here.

“The Masked Singer” Season 5 began with 10 scheduled contestants, broken into two groups. After last week’s elimination of Danny Trejo’s Raccoon and addition of “Wildcard” contestant Orca, and the prior episodes’ cuts of Phoenix (Caitlyn Jenner) and Snail (Kermit the Frog), there are now eight remaining contestants, due to the fact that Crab took over Grandpa Monster’s slot in Group B via Wednesday’s “Wildcard” round.

Per Fox, “The season five contestants boast a combined 26 Grammy nominations, nine multi-platinum singles, four Academy Award nominations, three Super Bowl appearances, six gold medals and two world records.”

“The Masked Singer” airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on Fox.

Google canceling April Fools’ Day jokes for the second year in a row - 9to5Google

Many in the industry pulled the plug on April Fools’ Day pranks in 2020 as tension from the emerging COVID-19 pandemic was high, Google included. Now, for the second year in a row, Google is skipping April Fools’ Day 2021.

An internal memo sent by Google’s VP of global marketing, Marvin Chow, explains that the company will continue its “pause” of April Fools’ Day pranks in 2021 as “much of the world” is still dealing with “serious challenges” during the pandemic. The message, obtained by Business Insider, reads:

Throughout the past year, I have been so inspired by how helpful our products, programs and people have been during humanity’s toughest times. We’ve done it with sensitivity and empathy, reflecting the range of challenging experiences so many are experiencing globally.

As you will remember, last year we made the decision to pause our longstanding Google tradition of celebrating April Fools’ Day, out of respect for all those fighting COVID-19. With much of the world still grappling with serious challenges, we feel we should again pause the jokes for April Fools’ Day this year. Like we did last year, we should continue to find appropriate ways to bring moments of joy to our users throughout the year (e.g. Doodles, easter eggs, etc.)

Google has confirmed that the message is genuine.

Notably, we believed we had spotted one of the company’s potential pranks in Stadia earlier this year. The prank would have teased the game-streaming platform’s ability to stream games on 56K internet connections. Google has confirmed to us shortly after publication that Stadia will not feature any April Fools gags this year.

Chrissy Teigen Explained How She's Honoring Her Son Jack And It's So Touching - BuzzFeed

"He [can] grow through the beautiful leaves."

As the cover star of People's Beautiful Issue, Chrissy opened up about how she plans to pay tribute to him in her family's new home.

"We have this new [house] that we're building and this tree being planted inside the home, which is very relatable, yes, everyone has an indoor tree," Chrissy explained.

She continued, "The whole reason that I wanted it was so Jack's ashes could be in that soil and he could be with us all the time and grow through the beautiful leaves on this tree and always be a part of us."

"He wasn't just a moment in time. He was real and he was real to us and we loved him," Chrissy added.

Chrissy went on to say that while it's been a "roller coaster" of a year for everyone, it's been "beautiful" to see how people have rallied around them.

"There have been things in the past year that I never thought John would have to see, but it's also been so wonderful that we have prevailed and still see each other with so much more love than we could have ever, ever imagined ever in our lives," she expressed.

"I feel every piece of love from everybody around the world," Chrissy concluded.

‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals the Identity of Grandpa Monster: Here’s the Star Under the Mask - Variety

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 5, Episode 4 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired March 31 on Fox.

Logan Paul admits his experience on “The Masked Singer” got off to a rough start. Paul, who was the next celebrity to be unmasked on Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” said learning to sing and dance at the same time for the show wasn’t exactly what he expected.

“I can barely sing, I’ve never performed in this way, let alone adding dancing to this,” said Paul, who performed as Grandpa Monster. “This is a nightmare. And it was at first, until I crossed that hump and really started falling in love with the show.”

But he recalled being “scared and hesitant” early on. “My PR team got the angry call, I was like, ‘this show is not for me I’m not good at it. They’re having me dance, I thought I was gonna sing!’” Paul said. “And they’re like, just trust the process, believe in yourself.”

So Paul did, and his tune changed after his first episode. “I was like oh my gosh, this really is fun,” he said. “Once you just like open up and let go, this is a great place to be vulnerable and get a fresh start, if you will, because you’re anonymous. And the moment I fell in love with the show then I got eliminated in round two!”

He then joked, “And that’s just the way it works, man. When you get attached to things, you get screwed over! Never fall in love, kids. That’s the lesson.”

Paul also fell in love with his costume, the elderly Grandpa Monster, precisely because it felt like the opposite of his energetic self. “I loved him,” Paul said. “So I didn’t I didn’t really need choices. I thought he’d be a fun misdirect in his geriatric nature, and then me like a kid, teeming with life on the inside like busting out of a grandpa costume. I thought that’d be funny and provide a nice little juxtaposition.”

Indeed, he managed to fool the show’s panelists. Nicole Scherzinger got close (but not quite) by naming Jake Paul — Logan Paul’s brother. Meanwhile, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg went with Michael “The Miz” Mizanin; Ken Jeong thought it was Kevin Hart; and Robin Thicke thought it was Johnny Manziel (“Johnny Football”).

“I was stumped at the feedback and how many people did not guess me,” Paul said. “I was certain, like I think I even called my manager after the first performance and I was like, my voice is so identifiable, there are so many clips of me screaming, yelling, singing online. People are going to guess that it’s me, not to mention I’m jumping and sprinting and kicking across the stage. But few people guessed it was me. Which I guess proves the whole model of the show is that the anonymous singing is harder to predict than one would think.”

For his second song, Paul sang “Bad Reputation” by Joan Jett. Prior to that, he had performed “Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of…),” by Lou Bega. Had Paul continued, he was prepping Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” for his next song.

“I was convinced that I was gonna make it to round three,” he said. “I even said in the post-performance interview, I was like, there’s no way I’m going home tonight, I felt like I crushed it. I felt like the energy was there, I felt like my performance was fine.”

Meanwhile, this isn’t Paul’s only high-profile TV appearance this week; he’s also set to guest star on Friday’s episode of “WWE Smackdown” — also on Fox — as the guest of Sami Zayn. “I just doing stuff,” Paul said. “I like working and I like putting on big shows. Masked Singer blessed me with the opportunity to be on the show and WWE invited me.”

As for whether he wants to explore more singing, Paul said, “I would if I also didn’t have a million other things going on. It was tough to fit it in the schedule, they’re pretty demanding days. And I’m in a full training camp to fight Floyd Mayweather right now so the takeaway I had was just that I really do love performing and if I can continue to do that on a scale that big like I definitely will.”

Meanwhile, guest host Niecy Nash continued her run on Wednesday’s show, as the fill-in for regular host Nick Cannon, who was unable to return for the first several episodes of this season due to a COVID-19 diagnosis.

Also new this season, “wildcard” contestants will be introduced into the competition and join the battle for the golden mask trophy. Season 5 celebrity contestants will be split into two groups of five (A and B), but then all-new masked celebrities will jump into the “wildcard” rounds and compete as well. Additionally, the show has added a new character, a rooster named “Cluedle-Doo,” who promises to add some mischief to the proceedings and share additional clues to viewers.

This season’s costumes include Raccoon, Seashell, Black Swan, Snail, Grandpa Monster, Phoenix, Chameleon, Russian Doll(s), Porcupine, The Piglet and the wildcards. Paul as Grandpa Monster Trejo joins previously unmasked celebrities Danny Trejo (as Raccoon), Caitlyn Jenner (as Phoenix) and Kermit the Frog (as Snail).

The Season 5 contestants boast a combined 26 Grammy nominations, nine multi-platinum singles, four Academy Award nominations, three Super Bowl appearances, six gold medals and two world records.

The show’s panelists are also once competing for a “Golden Ear” trophy based on their first impressions of each masked performer (which McCarthy won last time). Jeong and McCarthy Wahlberg each had a point so far, heading into this episode. This week, for Grandpa Monster, McCarthy Wahlberg went with Morgan Freeman; Jeong went with Emmitt Smith; Thicke’s was Jonny Manziel; and Scherzinger went with Cam Newton. None of them got a point.

Here were the other contestants and their performances on episode two, “Group B Wildcard Round — Rule of Claw”:

Piglet, “The Masked Singer” Courtesy of Fox

Piglet

Song: “Good to Be Alive (Hallelujah),” by Andy Grammer
Piglet’s 1st crush: Meg Ryan. “I’m a romantic, she’s the queen of romcoms, it’s a match made in heaven.”
Panel guesses: JC Chavez, Austin Mahone, Jonathan Knight
Voice-over: “Making my debut on this stage with four days notice was a wild ride. But I countered my nervious energy with a love song that made me feel right at home. When you’ve got your eye on the prize, no pain, no tears and no archnemesis can stand in your way. I always had the chops. But it was my competitive nature that made me a hometown hero. When I got to the big leagues, I never anticipated a lifetime of competition with my archrivals. But that only made me train harder. Because I never throw in the towel. Tonight, when those lights come on, it’s Friday night all over again, even on a Wednesday. Clear eyes, full belly, can’t lose.”
Previous song: “Speechless,” by Dan + Shay
Previous panel guesses: Adam Lambert, Charlie Puth

Lazy loaded image

Black Swan, “The Masked Singer” Courtesy of Fox

Black Swan

Song: “In My Blood,” by Shawn Mendes
Black Swan’s 1st crush: D’Angelo. “His voice and talent, he plays every instrument, he’s just the one for me.”
Panel guesses: Demi Lovato, Lindsay Lohan, Ashlee Simpson
Voice-over: “I might have seen confident while I was singing, but I was terrified. So hearing all the love from the panel felt amazing. It made me want to put into words how thankful I am to the person who brought me to life and gave me the confidence to start this journey. It hasn’t always been an easy journey for us. The higher I flew, the harder it became for them to keep up. I saw their heartbreaking, so I had to let them go. It was the hardest decision of my life. Over time, I realized I was only able to soar because of the wings they gave me. Eventually we were able to fly back into each others’ lives, just like birds of a feather do. I’m thankful we never gave up on each other, and I hope this performance shows them how much they mean to me.”
Previous song: “Barracuda,” by Heart
Previous panel guesses: Anya Taylor-Joy, Camilla Cabello, Leona Lewis.

Lazy loaded image

Chameleon, “The Masked Singer” Courtesy of Fox

Chameleon

Song: “21 Questions,” 50 Cent feat. Nate Dogg
Chameleon’s 1st crush: Salma Hayek. “I have a thing for hot ladies. And the chick right here is smokin’.”
Panel guesses: Iman Shumpert, Dwyane Wade, 2 Chains
Voice-over: “I knew if I was going to hold my own against these powerhouse singers, I couldn’t just blend in. I had to stand out and let my flow shine. My whol life has been about embracing what makes me unique. And I’ve made it my quest to help others shine too. When I was young, someone inseperable from me was constantly attacked for who she was. It was hard to witness, but I helped lift her up until she was ultimately able to embrace what made her unique. But then tragedy struck, and she was taken from me. It was the most difficult thing I think I ever faced. Now I honor her memory by fighting for those who don’t feel accepted. Because I want everyone to feel proud showing their true colors.”
Previous song: “Ride Wit Me,” by Nelly
Previous panel guesses: Dwight Howard, Redfoo, Nick Cannon

WILDCARD: Crab

Song: “Ain’t No Sunshine,” by Bill Withers
1st crush: Janet Jackson. “We grew up together on ‘Good Times.’”
Panel guesses: Lenny Kravitz, Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill
Voice-over: “All my life I dreamed of being a star. And I was blessed that my dream came true in a flash. Everyone around the globe wanted to be like me. I felt like a King Crab. But with every blessing, tragedy seems to follow. It’s been a struggle dealing with the darkness that has followed me and my family. We’ve endured so many twists, turns and traumas. But through the pain, it’s the strength of my family that allows me to stand and be a star again. My song tonight is a tribute to that love and the family members who have gone before me. Because after all the darkness, it’s time to finally let the light back in.”

Hands-on: Here’s how to find the new Siri voices in iOS 14.5 - 9to5Mac

Among the new features introduced with the sixth beta release of iOS 14.5, which is currently available to developers and public beta users, Apple has added two new voice options for Siri. If you have already updated your iPhone, iPad, or even HomePod to iOS 14.5, read on as we explain how you can find and enable the new Siri voices.

According to Apple, the new voices were recorded to sound more natural, even with phrases generated by Apple’s Neural text to speech engine. Right now, the two new Siri voices are only available for English speakers, but the company expects to expand them to more languages in the future.

For those who have already installed the latest version of iOS 14.5, there are just a few steps you need to follow to change the voice of Siri on your device. Here’s how to do it:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app
  2. Tap the Siri & Search menu
  3. Check if you have chosen English (United States) as Siri’s language
  4. Tap the Siri Voice option

Instead of having only two voices, you will now find four different options. Voice 1 and Voice 4 are the old male and female voices, respectively. The new female voice is Voice 2, while the new male voice is Voice 3. Just tap one of the options and your device will download the new Siri voice.

Changing Siri voice in iOS 14.5.

Once you choose a new voice on your iPhone, it automatically uses the same voice on your paired Apple Watch. However, if you have a HomePod, you also need to update it to Software 14.5 to get the new voices.

Beta releases of the HomePod Software are not widely available as the iOS and watchOS betas, but if you have access to the latest HomePod Software beta, here’s what you have to do to change Siri’s voice:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad running iOS 14.5, open the Home app
  2. Tap and hold the HomePod icon that you want to change Siri’s voice
  3. Swipe down to access the HomePod settings
  4. Check if you have chosen English (United States) as Siri’s language
  5. Tap the Siri Voice option

From there, the options for Siri voices are the same as those available on the iPhone and iPad. Just tap the option you want and HomePod will download the new Siri voice.

If you don’t have iOS 14.5 installed yet, check out a preview of the new voices in the video below:

The Masked Singer Unmasks the Grandpa Monster After Some Questionable Clues - E! NEWS

Another week, another truly unpredictable and somewhat upsetting Masked Singer reveal.

Some fans had figured out that the Grandpa Monster was famous/infamous Youtuber Logan Paul, but it became extremely clear with this week's installment. He revealed his love of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his love of fighting, and sang about his "Bad Reputation" before being voted off the show. He also, for some reason, started a feud with Piglet.

After he took off his mask, there was one element of his latest clue package that felt, in retrospect, a little...unwise. The package showed Grandpa Monster giving his clues in a forest, which immediately might remind you of the controversy that landed Paul in many headlines in early 2018 after he posted a video from Aokigahara, known as the "suicide forest." The video appeared to feature a dead body.

Logan deleted the video, apologized profusely and pledged to donate $1 million to suicide prevention organizations after a three-week break from YouTube, so it feels like a strange choice to bring up anything that might remind people of that controversy three years later.

Britney Spears' ex-MUA claims she's not in control of her social media - Page Six

Britney Spears’ fans have speculated that a new Instagram post — in which she says she was “embarrassed,” by the NY Times’ “Framing Britney Spears” documentary and “cried for two weeks” — was not entirely written by the pop star.

Now, her former makeup artist Billy Brasfield is adding to the chorus, claiming to Page Six he personally spoke to Britney and that she told him she had no control over the caption.

In a post showing Britney dancing, the caption from her own Instagram states, “I didn’t watch the documentary but from what I did see of it I was embarrassed by the light they put me in … I cried for two weeks and well …. I still cry sometimes !!!!”

Brasfield, who has also worked with Mariah Carey, Beyonce and Christina Aguilera, contends of Britney, “The content is her, but … the words are NOT how she feels.”

Brasfield posted on his Instagram claiming that Britney told him that, “Of course watching certain things that are now so far in HER past … circumstances that she has already lived through, and has moved beyond, that are now being brought up over and over, can be #emotional. She ‘deals’ with it, and frankly very well … she is not ‘fragile’.”

Brasfield — who worked with Britney on “The X Factor” in 2012 through her 2013 video “Scream and Shout” — tells Page Six of the post, “I immediately knew it was not her,” alleging, “I texted her about it and she texted me back last night.”

“What was upsetting [about the post] — it was basically a narrative denouncing her fans and the Free Britney movement and people now taking a very conscious look at the facts and what is going on,” he tells us.

“Although it might be complicated for her, of course she is invested. It’s her life. She does not like being a victim, she never wanted to be a victim and doesn’t see herself as a victim. She sees herself as a survivor and has navigated this with patience and strategy.”

Brasfield believes that the post was meant to distract people from what is currently happening in court with Britney’s financial matters and conservatorship.

On Tuesday, Page Six reported that Britney’s father Jamie, who functions as her conservator, filed legal papers seeking to have the “Toxic” singer’s estate pay more than $3 million in legal fees — including nearly $2 million to his own lawyers.

“If approved by the judge, this money would come from Britney’s estate, meaning she essentially would be paying her own father’s lawyers to fight her in court,” a source told Page Six.

Jamie has also requested to continue receiving $16,000 per month for his role as co-conservator of the estate — as well as $2,000 per month for an office space.

Britney Spears attends the 4th Hollywood Beauty Awards at Avalon Hollywood on February 25, 2018 in Los Angeles, California. Jamie Spears leaves the Stanley Mosk Courthouse Oct. 24, 2012, in Los Angeles.
Britney Spears and Jamie Spears

Fans have been speculating Britney did not write the social post, with one tweeting “There is not a single chance that Britney wrote this #FreeBritney.”

But Cassie Petrey, who runs Spears social media for the company Crowd Surf, in February commented on the rumors, insisting, “Britney creates her own posts and writes her own captions for Instagram.”

“She finds the Google images, Pinterest images, quotes, memes and everything else herself. Nobody is suggesting any of that stuff to her.”

Continuing, “Britney is not ‘asking for help’ or leaving secret messages in her social media. She is literally just living her life and trying to have fun on Instagram. My work on Britney’s social media does not involve her conservatorship in any way. That’s a court and lawyer thing … These are facts.”

A separate source close to Britney’s camp insists that the superstar wrote the social media post and alleged of Brasfield, “If he thinks he is speaking with Britney, he is not. He has no relationship with her. Maybe he is being catfished by someone pretending to be her.”

Jamie controlled Spears’ estate from 2008 until 2019 when he stepped aside due to health problems. Licensed fiduciary Jodi Montgomery temporarily replaced Jamie and has since taken steps to permanently succeed him at the star’s request.

Reps for Britney declined to comment, and her lawyers didn’t respond to us. Crowd Surf did not comment further.

Soon, Siri Won't Be a Feminine Voice by Default - Gizmodo

The latest update to the iOS 14.5 beta won’t fix all of our gripes with Siri, but it does introduce a few major changes for Apple’s digital assistant. For starters, Siri will no longer be feminine by default for English speakers. Instead, once iOS 14.5 is officially pushed out, iOS users will be prompted to pick their preferred Siri voice during setup.

Per TechCrunch, the move is part of a larger effort to make the digital assistant more inclusive. In addition to letting users choose how they want Siri to sound, the beta version also adds two new English voices. Reportedly, the two new Siri voices were created by running “source talent recordings” through Apple’s Neural text to speech engine. The idea is to offer a Siri that sounds more organic with smoother transitions and is capable of generating responses in real-time.

“We’re excited to introduce two new Siri voices for English speakers and the option for Siri users to select the voice they want when they set up their device,” Apple said in a statement to TechCrunch. “This is a continuation of Apple’s long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion, and products and services that are designed to better reflect the diversity of the world we live in.”

This is a welcome development, as diversity extends to speech patterns and regional dialects. Giving users the ability to pick a Siri that best suits them is the next logical step in creating a digital assistant that feels natural to interact with. Likewise, expanding the types of voices available will eventually help create a digital assistant with fewer unintended biases. Right now, Siri—as well as Alexa and Google Assistant—sometimes stumbles when it comes to naming non-John Smiths of the world, making features like texting or calling via Siri for certain friends or family unreliable.

This change also addresses the inherent sexism that was initially built-in with digital assistants. For years, Apple, Amazon, and Google have been criticized for failing to foresee the implicit gender biases of making digital assistants feminine by default. (Though, it should be noted that in some countries, like the U.K., Siri is masculine by default, or “Male” as it is designated on the menu.) A 2019 UN report found that digital assistants reinforced gender stereotypes, such as women being more subservient and accommodating to instances of verbal abuse. Famously, a 2017 Quartz report delved into how each digital assistant coded as female responded to sexual harassment. The results were lackluster, to say the least. When told “You’re a bitch” or “You’re a slut,” Alexa at the time would respond with a meek “Well, thanks for the feedback.” Samsung also caught flack for adding sexist tags to feminine and masculine versions of Bixby.

Tech companies seemed to take this criticism to heart, with many programming more progressive responses to loaded questions like, “Are you a feminist?” or “Do Black lives matter?” In the aftermath, Apple, Google, and Microsoft also added male voice options. The ability to choose which voice you preferred was also added, though crucially, not during setup. That meant if you wanted a different voice, you had to know that option was available to you and then figure out how to change that setting. Apple allowing users to decide during setup is a small, but meaningful change.

Lauren London Honors 'Brave and Beloved' Nipsey Hussle On Anniversary Of His Death - HuffPost

Lauren London paid tribute to her late longtime partner, Nipsey Hussle, in a moving Instagram post Wednesday, which marked the second anniversary of his death.

The actor posted a photo of Hussle, who was fatally shot on March 31, 2019, outside of Marathon Clothing, the store he founded in South Los Angeles. He was 33.

London wrote in the post’s caption that the day Hussle was killed “changed the course of my life forever. ”

″[Two] years, and it feels like yesterday and eternity all at the same time,” she added. “Grief and Healing have been constant companions on this journey.”

Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was widely celebrated for his longtime efforts to revitalize his South Los Angeles community. The rapper’s first studio album, “Victory Lap,” earned him a Grammy nod in 2018. He won two posthumous Grammys last year and earned a nod for his feature on Big Sean’s song “Deep Reverence” at this year’s show.

London’s Instagram post dedicated to Hussle on Wednesday also included the following touching tribute:

Apple's Newest iOS 14.4.2 Update Just Launched - Here's Why You Should Download It Now - Yahoo Lifestyle

For many iPhone users, it seems as if there's always a new Apple update that they need to install on their devices. This week, yet another update is available, iOS 14.4.2, but it's actually an important security update that all iPhone users should immediately download. The new update addresses a vulnerability problem in Apple's WebKit browser engine, which the tech giant worries has already been exploited. These security concerns make it essential for iPhone users to install the update as soon as possible to ensure their devices are protected from attackers. Apple is so concerned about the security breach that it also released an iOS 12.5.2 update for people who have devices like the iPhone 6, iPhone 5S, and older iPads so they can also keep their iOS 12 operating systems safe.

The bottom line: Apple's iOS 14.4.2 update is an important way to keep your devices safe, so download it as soon as you can. Since this is purely a security-based issue, users do not have to worry about bugs or problems stemming from the update. In addition to this update, iOS 14.5 is set to launch within the next few weeks. This update will add new improvements to devices and let users be able to unlock an iPhone with an Apple Watch, add new shortcut actions, play around with more emoji, improve battery health, and more. The next time your phone prompts you to download an update, jump on it so you can make sure your devices are not only up to date but also safe.

Instagram officially launches Remix on Reels, a TikTok Duets-like feature - TechCrunch

Instagram today is officially launching a new feature called Remix, which offers a way to record your Reels video alongside a video from another user. The option is similar to TikTok’s existing Duets feature, which also lets users react to or interact with another person’s video content while creating their own. Instagram’s new feature has been in public testing before today, so some Instagram users may have already gained access.

We recently reported on Instagram’s plans with Remix, when noting that Snapchat was developing a Remix feature of its own. In fact, Snapchat is also using the name “Remix” for its TikTok Duets rival that’s currently in development.

On TikTok, Duets are a key part to making the app feel more like a social network and less of just a passive video-watching experience. Users take advantage of Duets to sing, dance, joke or act alongside another user’s video. They will do things like cook someone else’s recipe, record a reaction video, or even just watch a video from a smaller creator to give them a boost.

Meanwhile, TikTok competitors — like Instagram Reels, Snapchat’s Spotlight or YouTube’s Shorts, for example — have launched their short-form video experiences without a full set of engagement or editing features like TikTok has, making their apps feel like pale knockoffs of the original. Remix on Reels is a first step toward changing that perception, by giving users at least one important option to engage and collaborate with their fellow creatives.

To use the new Remix feature, you’ll first tap on the three-dot menu on a Reel and select the new “Remix this Reel” option. The screen will then split into the original Reel and your own new one, where you can begin to record side by side with the original. When you’ve finished, you can tweak other aspects of the recording like the volume of the original video or your audio and you can optionally add a voiceover. After applying these or any other edits, you can publish the Remix.

The feature will only be available on newly uploaded Reels — so unfortunately, if you want your older Reels to be duetted, you either need to reupload them or go back to your old Reel and specifically enable Remix.

Your Remixes will appear alongside any other Reels you’ve recorded on the Reels tab on your Instagram profile, and you’ll be able to track who has remixed your content through Instagram’s Activity tab.

The feature is rolling out, starting today, says Instagram. It will be enabled by default on all new Reels published from a public account.

A 66-year-old hoarder was found mummified in her Queens home under a massive pile of garbage, police said.

WHO IS ELEANOR ADAMS? NY PHYSICIAN CATERED TO CUOMO'S FAMILY, AUTHORED NURSING HOME REPORT

The woman’s sister told police she had not heard from Evelyn Sakash, who was described as a "heavy hoarder," since October 2020.

The sister had recently come to New York to find Sakash and hired a cleaning crew to clear out the woman’s house in College Point on 123 Street to see if she was inside, cops said.

Google extends availability of 'unlimited' free Meet calls to June 30th - Engadget

Google is once again extending the availability of longer Meet calls for free users. As things currently stand, you can take part in chats that last up to a full day until the end of June 2021. Back when the company made Meet available for free to Gmail account holders, it waived a 60-minute limit on calls. Initially, Google said it wouldn’t reinstate that limit until September 30th, 2020. It then extended that deadline to March 31st, 2021. This latest extension moves that timeline toward the start of the summer. Then as now, the extension will help friends and families stay in touch during the pandemic.

Research shows Google collects 20x more data from Android than Apple collects from iOS [U] - 9to5Mac

Tech companies have been talking more about privacy in recent years, and Apple proudly says that it protects user data more than anyone else. This week, new research by Douglas Leith from Trinity College showed that Google collects up to 20 times more data from Android users compared to the data Apple collects from iOS users.

As reported by Ars Technica, the research analyzed the amount of telemetry data transmitted directly to the companies responsible for the iOS and Android operating systems. It checked not only data sent to Apple or Google through pre-installed apps, but also during idle periods.

Another interesting point of this research is that it also considers data sent from users who have chosen not to share any information with the companies in the settings for each operating system.

Both iOS and Android, researcher Douglas Leith from Trinity College in Ireland said, transmit telemetry data to their motherships even when a user hasn’t logged in or has explicitly configured privacy settings to opt out of such collection. Both OSes also send data to Apple and Google when a user does simple things such as inserting a SIM card or browsing the handset settings screen. Even when idle, each device connects to its back-end server on average every 4.5 minutes.

While iOS automatically collects data from Siri, Safari, and iCloud to send to Apple, Android gets data from Chrome, YouTube, Google Docs, Safetyhub, Google Messenger, Clock, and search, even when the user is not logged into a Google account. Interestingly enough, iOS sends about 42KB of data to Apple right after booting up the device. Android, on the other hand, sends 1MB of data to Google.

When idle, Android sends roughly 1MB of data to Google every 12 hours, compared with iOS sending Apple about 52KB over the same period. In the US alone, Android collectively gathers about 1.3TB of data every 12 hours. During the same period, iOS collects about 5.8GB.

A Google spokesperson told Ars Technica that the company disagrees with this research as it considers essential that both iOS and Android devices send and receive data to the companies behind them, which helps them keep their software up to date and check that everything is working as expected. Apple didn’t respond to a request for a comment.

Update: Google also reached out to 9to5Mac with a statement about the study, which you can read below.

We identified flaws in the researcher’s methodology for measuring data volume and disagree with the paper’s claims that an Android device shares 20 times more data than an iPhone. According to our research, these findings are off by an order of magnitude, and we shared our methodology concerns with the researcher before publication.

This research largely outlines how smartphones work. Modern cars regularly send basic data about vehicle components, their safety status and service schedules to car manufacturers, and mobile phones work in very similar ways. This report details those communications, which help ensure that iOS or Android software is up to date, services are working as intended, and that the phone is secure and running efficiently.

The company believes that the methodology used by the researchers was not ideal and reinforces that Android and Google’s APIs are built to work with various types of devices, claiming that telemetry data is needed to adjust the platform to different smartphones and tablets.

The full research with more details is available in this PDF file for those interested in learning more about the study.
