Chrome for Android’s dark theme is now ever so slightly darker - 9to5Google

Chrome 93 is rolling out as a quieter release than usual on desktop and mobile today. However, a small tweak in Chrome for Android sees Google switch the dark theme to a darker shade of gray.

The app and system status bars are where you’re most likely to notice this change. It’s also apparent (though less so in screenshots, compared to on-device viewing) in the Tab Switcher grid and settings, as well as the New Tab Page (NTP).

This darker shade (#1F1F1F) is closer to black, while Chrome previously opted for a gray hue (35363A) that had some bluish undertones. Google has also ever so slightly altered the Omnibox’s color as a result of the main change, with the overflow (three dot) menu and gesture bar following.

Meanwhile, on the NTP, Google no longer uses white outlines for certain elements and is just using color to distinguish between the background and elements .

Left: Old | Right: New

The browser is expected to get some Material You updates in the future, and today’s change could be getting ready for that but Chrome users on older devices will also benefit from these color tweaks. The dark theme alterations are live on Android 11 and 12 devices we checked today running Chrome 93, which is rolling out now via the Play Store.

Meanwhile, Google today invited those on Android to test the ability to create shareable text highlight cards and a new search feature.

Western Digital Reimagines HDD - Flash Integration with OptiNAND - AnandTech

The last few years have seen plenty of new innovations come up in the hard-disk drive market. For quite some time, the HDD technology roadmap was shared industry-wide - vendors introduced new technologies at different points in time, but they were all similar in nature. As a recent example, HGST (now, Western Digital) was the first to market with helium-filled HDDs, but both Seagate and Toshiba followed up with similar drives within a few years.

Prior to 2017, there was consensus that heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) would help drive the increase in storage density for HDDs after traditional perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) ran out of steam. Western Digital sprang a surprise in Q4 2017 by announcing the decision to go with microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) for future HDDs. Seagate, in the meanwhile, has been all-in on HAMR and also launched 20TB HDDs based on the technology for enterprise customers (those HAMR drives are yet to hit retail, though). In the meanwhile, Western Digital was promising MAMR drives for 16TB+ HDDs, but eventually back-tracked in favor of energy-enhanced PMR (ePMR). Toshiba, on the other hand, introduced flux control-MAMR (FC-MAMR) in its MG09-series of enterprise 16TB and 18TB HDDs.

At the HDD Reimagine event today, Western Digital is introducing OptiNAND - a novel architecture involving the integration of an embedded iNAND UFS embedded flash drive (EFD) on the drive's mainboard.

In conjunction, the company is also announcing that it has been sampling its first 20TB non-SMR drives based on OptiNAND-enabled ePMR to select customers, and that it would be adopting the OptiNAND platform moving forward for all 20TB+ HDDs. The company also sees a path to 50TB OptiNAND-enabled ePMR drives in the second half of the decade.

While the company did not quantify the amount of NAND in its OptiNAND drives, they are stressing the fact that it is not a hybrid drive (SSHD). Unlike SSHDs, the OptiNAND drives do not store any user data at all during normal operation. Instead, the NAND is being used to store metadata from HDD operation in order to improve capacity, performance, and reliability.

Capacity

Western Digital's OptiNAND announcement also conveys the fact that their 20TB 9-platter HDDs will continue to use energy-enhanced PMR (ePMR). In addition to the use of a triple-stage actuator to enable more accurate positioning of the heads over the tracks, the OptiNAND aspect is being touted as the key to enabling 2.2TB capacity for each platter.

The increase in areal density is being achieved by cramming the tracks on the platter closer together (increased TPI), while also moving out some of the metadata (both factory-generated and mid-user operation) out from the platter to the NAND. In particular, Western Digital made a mention of the repeatable run out (RRO) recording of the head jitter / error position as the spindle revolves. This data (running into multiple gigabytes) is generated in the factory during manufacturing. It is typically stored in the disk, taking up space that could have potentially been used for user data. The OptiNAND architecture moves this to the NAND in the EFD.

One of the key challenges to packing tracks closer together is the concept of 'adjacent track interference' (ATI). This results in the need to periodically refresh data in the platter's tracks as it could get corrupted by writes to adjacent tracks. Currently available HDDs triggered these refreshes on a track-by-track basis based on the recording of write operations at the track-level. One of the downsides to increasing areal density by increasing the TPI is the need to do more frequent refreshes. From refreshing once in 10000 write operations in early HDDs, the narrow tracks now need to be refreshed as frequently as once every 6 writes. Beyond a certain point, it doesn't make sense to increase TPI any further because the increase in the frequency of ATI refreshes has an extreme impact on performance. In present-generation HDDs, these refreshes have been triggered at the track level by recording write operations at that hierarchy. The OptiNAND architecture allows the write operations to be recorded at the sector level. This means that the refresh operations are more spread out both temporally and spatially, allowing the tracks to be packed closer together without sacrificing performance. In turn, this increases the areal density.

Performance

Consumers can operate HDDs with the write cache in the device enabled or disabled. Irrespective of the cache enablement, the HDD has to buffer up the incoming data. In the disabled case, the amount of data that could be buffered up is dependent on the amount of data that can be safely flushed out to non-volatile storage in the case of an emergency power-off (EPO) situation. The presence of significant NAND capacity in the HDD means that the drive can use the rotational energy present in the platters to flush out more data in the DRAM into the NAND (Present-day HDDs dump out the DRAM data into serial flash - around a couple of MBs worth - in an EPO situation). The ability to buffer out more data in this case means that the performance of write-cache enabled case and write-cache disabled case approach each other in OptiNAND-enabled HDDs.

Western Digital also claims that the 'write cache enabled' case can benefit on the performance front. This is an indirect result of the reduced refresh rates (referencing the observations in the previous sub-section on how OptiNAND handles adjacent-track interference) that allows the HDD to spend more time in servicing user data requests. Again, there was no quantification of the improvement in IOPS for different access patterns over non-OptiNAND HDDs in Western Digital's event.

Reliability

The aspects of OptiNAND used to enhance the performance of the drives in the write caching disabled state also contribute to enhancing their reliability under EPO conditions. By including faster non-volatile storage compared to serial flash, Western Digital claims that up to 50x more data can be flushed out compared to previous-generation HDDs.

Concluding Remarks

Western Digital claims that the vertical integration possible with the HDD technology from the WD / HGST side along with the flash technology from the SanDisk side is essential for the creation of a platform like OptiNAND.

There is bound to be a cost-premium associated with the drives due to the NAND integration. New recording technologies (like HAMR and MAMR) require significant investment into the design of the recording heads as well as platters, and need to be revamped every few generations. On the other hand, technologies like OptiNAND are independent of the underlying technology.

Without exact quantification of the increase in areal density enabled by OptiNAND, it is not possible to provide comparative comments on the Capacity aspect of Western Digital's OptiNAND trifecta - except that the company is now able to introduce 20TB hard drives to the market with the same ePMR technology used in its 18TB drives (around 2.2TB/platter).

The Performance aspect should be easier to evaluate when OptiNAND drives hit retail. While the benefits for the 'write caching disabled' case (where the NAND can act as a safe cache in an EPO situation) are easy to verify (essentially acting the same as the 'write caching enabled' case), the pure 'write caching enabled' case should be much more interesting to analyze against competing drives of the same capacity.

Western Digital indicated that all of their 20TB+ HDDs moving forward will be OptiNAND-enabled. This will be across all market verticals - cloud deployment, enterprise drives (Gold), storage for surveillance recording (Purple line), and NAS (Red line). It must be noted that the company has a 20TB SMR drive already in the market that is not OptiNAND-enabled. The new HDD architecture with its flexible SoC and high-performance NAND integration can also be used to enable customer-specific enhancements in the future. The ability to use the NAND to dynamically remap sectors can increase areal density and improve performance much more in SMR drives. Based on this, we can expect OptiNAND-enabled SMR drives to gain significant capacity advantage over CMR drives in comparison to what is being seen in the market currently.

The HDD industry is not yet in dire need of CPR, but Western Digital's usage of OptiNAND to address the Capacity, Performance, and Reliability trifecta is yet another unique aspect in the innovation-rich hard-disk drive market. Western Digital has both HDD and complete flash technology (from NAND fabrication to controller) in-house, while the other HDD vendors do not have that advantage. As such, it might take the other vendors some time to catch up on the advantages of using NAND for HDD metadata.

Kourtney Kardashian's ex, Scott Disick, blasts her PDA with Travis Barker in alleged DMs to another past beau - Fox News

Scott Disick allegedly slid into the DMs of Kourtney Kardashian’s ex-boyfriend, Younes Bendjima, in an attempt to join forces against the reality star who has been jet-setting around the world with Travis Barker -- but Bendjima didn’t exactly go for the buddy routine.

Referencing the wildly public display of affection the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star, 42, and Blink-182 drummer, 45, have been exchanging during their recent vacation to Italy, Disick, 38, allegedly appeared to turn to Bendjima for support but the model, 28, didn’t take the bait and ended up putting Disick on blast afterward.

"Yo is this chick ok!???? Broooo like what is this. In the middle of Italy," Disick allegedly wrote to Bendjima, who shared the alleged direct message to his Instagram Stories on Monday. The message was sent alongside a photo of Kardashian – who is the mother of Disick’s three children – straddling Barker on a boat.

"Doesn’t matter to me as long as she’s happy," Bendjima appeared to write back, adding, "PS: i aint your bro."

Bendjima, who dated the Poosh founder from 2016 until their split in 2018, also wrote over the screenshot of the alleged direct message, stating: "keep the same energy you had about me publicly, privately."

In a follow-up slide on his Instagram Story, Bendjima wrote, "couldn’t miss this one. He been playing around for too long, tired [sic] to stay quiet and be the nice guy."

Disick has yet to publicly respond to Bendjima, who many believed had also shaded his ex in a shared-then-deleted Instagram Story post back in April.

"Shamelessness has become so normal in today’s society that modesty has become strange," Bendjima posted at the time in the wake of Kardashian sharing a photo of herself donning a thong bikini and kissing Barker.

The Galaxy S21 will get Android 12 and One UI 4 in a September beta - Android Police

The Galaxy S21 will get Android 12 and One UI 4 in a September beta

Many of us have been eagerly anticipating One UI 4, which will show us Samsung's take on Android 12. The company accidentally announced the beta early in July before pulling it and saying that we'd need to wait until September for more details. Now things are finally moving ahead, as the original announcement is reposted with more information.

As spotted by SamMobile, Samsung's beta operation manager has posted the One UI 4 beta announcement on the South Korean forums, confirming that the Galaxy S12 series should see the update sometime in September.

The announcement also includes the same promo image that was mistakenly posted in July. The general gist from this image is that the beta will be available for the S21 series regardless of whether it's unlocked or a carrier model. You'll need to open the Samsung Members app, look for the One UI 4 beta banner, and enroll to participate.

Samsung hasn't said which countries will get the beta, but usually, it hits South Korea first, with the US following a few days later and a European release one or two weeks after that. Until that rollout begins, it'll be a waiting game of closing and reopening the Samsung Members app several times an hour until we finally get what we want. Or am I the only one who does that?

One UI 4 is expected to bring a major design overhaul to Samsung's software experience, possibly mimicking Google's Material You color theme, and under the hood changes to improve performance and battery life. We'll know more once it's available, and of course, we'll be covering everything new in the next version of One UI.

Gene Simmons tests positive for COVID-19, Kiss tour postponed - New York Post

Another member of the legendary rock group Kiss has tested positive for COVID-19.

Following a Friday announcement that Paul Stanley tested positive for the virus — and that the band was canceling the evening’s show as a result — Gene Simmons has also tested positive, and the group will be postponing multiple upcoming shows as a result.

“Kiss will postpone their next four tour dates. While Paul Stanley recently tweeted that he has recovered from COVID, Gene Simmons has now tested positive and is experiencing mild symptoms,” Kiss tweeted Tuesday. “The band and crew will remain at home and isolate for the next 10 days and doctors have indicated the tour should be able to resume on September 9th at FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA.”

The Post has reached out to reps for Simmons for comment.

Purchased tickets for their “End of the Road” farewell tour will be honored at the new dates once they are announced, the post added. The now postponed shows were set to take place in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin. The show canceled upon Stanley’s diagnosis was in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.

In announcing the rockers’ breakthrough cases, Kiss has also revealed that the entire band and touring crew are fully vaccinated.

Members of Kiss “and their crew have operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows,” the band wrote in a statement following Stanley’s diagnosis. “The tour also has a COVID safety protocol officer on staff full-time that is ensuring everyone is closely following all CDC guidelines.”

Stanley shared his experience with the virus on Twitter

“My COVID symptoms were MILD compared to many others and let me tell you … It kicked my ass,” he wrote Monday. “It’s over now.”

Windows 11 launches October 5th, but will you upgrade? - Rock Paper Shotgun

Microsoft today announced plans to launch Windows 11 on October 5th, inviting us to a world of exciting new features like rounded corners and a new default desktop wallpaper. As new named versions of Windows goes, 11 seems a smaller upgrade than from, say, Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, or from Window 8 to straight-up not owning a PC at all. Still, it has a few handy features for gaming. And it will roll out as a free upgrade from 10, if you want it.

"The free upgrade to Windows 11 starts on October 5 and will be phased and measured with a focus on quality," Microsoft blogman Aaron Woodman explained. "Following the tremendous learnings from Windows 10, we want to make sure we’re providing you with the best possible experience. That means new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to in-market devices based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, age of device and other factors that impact the upgrade experience. We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022."

Big fan of the phrase "tremendous learnings." Just tremendous learnings, mate. But yes, when Microsoft deem your PC eligible, Windows Update will let you know.

Windows 11 does have different hardware requirements, particularly in requiring a Trusted Platform Module 2.0 chip. When I tried MS's doodad that checks if your PC can run Windows 11, I got a big no (though I understand fiddling with your BIOS might be fruitful). MS have updated the minimum system requirements since then, mind, and plan to update the Checker. Still, I'm in no hurry to switch. I'm not sure how much Windows 11 would benefit me until I buy new hardware.

One of the headline gaming features in W11 is Auto HDR. As seen on the new Xbox, it can add HDR support to older games (DX11 and up) which don't support that there fancy monitor stuff. I don't own an HDR monitor and don't intend to buy one, but maybe one day I will? Microsoft also tout faster loading times thanks to their DirectStorage tech, though it'll be coming to Windows 10 in a less-fast form too. Ah, I'll probably not switch until I get a new PC. Win10 works fine enough for me.

Sounds like the built-in Android app support won't be in at launch either. Woodman said, "We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel; this will start with a preview for Windows Insiders over the coming months."

A screenshot of Windows 11's start menu in dark mode.
Big '90s Internet PhotoShop tutorial culture' vibes.

Our James is being won over by Windows 11's new UI, mind. "I particularly like the completely rejigged Start menu, which looks a lot better for making customisations without all the screen-hogging tiles that Windows has pushed since Windows 8," he said.

I will concede that I do like how the default wallpaper looks backgrounds I used on LiteStep in, like, 1998.

Microsoft plan to support Windows 10 through October 14th, 2025, so you won't instantly be cut off from updates if you choose not to upgrade. But eventually, years down the line, Windows 10 will likely become less safe to use thanks to unpatched security holes. You know, like how it only takes 13 seconds for a fresh Windows XP install connected to the Internet to start printing out pornography then fire up a botnet minting and selling NFTs of webcam photos of looking surprised by the obscenity pouring forth from your Epson Stylus Color 300.

Exclusive: Google's new Pixel Stand for the Pixel 6 should support 23W fast wireless charging - Android Police

Exclusive: Google's new Pixel Stand for the Pixel 6 should support 23W fast wireless charging

For a few months now there have been rumors of a new Google Pixel Stand with a fan to keep it cool. This led to rumors about higher wattage wireless charging coming in this year's Pixel 6. Thanks to a US retailer, we were able to confirm that the Pixel Stand, and presumably Pixel 6, should support 23W wireless charging.

According to our retail sources, one of the major US carriers has already started to input accessories for the upcoming Google Pixel 6 series. One of these accessories happened to be the new Pixel wireless charger. The name in the system is "Google Pixel 23W WL Stand." There is a chance this is a mistake or typo, but that seems unlikely.

While we weren't able to get any other information, this does tell us Google is going to have the second-fastest wireless charging in the United States, overtaking Samsung and Apple's 15W wireless charging but still falling short of the OnePlus 50W charger. This is still faster than the original Pixel Stand, which maxed out at 10W on Pixel devices. We'll be able to see how it actually compares in real-world usage when the Pixel 6 is released later this fall.

Nobody should buy the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s official S Pen Case - XDA Developers

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is here, the newest premium foldable from Samsung. Perhaps you’ve even just received your shiny preorder device in the mail. The phone itself is great, definitely the best foldable yet. Samsung is also known for putting out a bevy of accessories with each flagship launch. In general, Samsung accessories tend to be well built with a number of useful features. At Samsung Unpacked, Samsung did unveil the S Pen Case for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, a flip case that not only protected the new foldable but also had a storage area for the S Pen Fold Edition. Unfortunately, this new Galaxy Z Fold 3 Flip Cover with S Pen is neither well-built nor useful.

z fold 3 case back view

The case itself looks decent enough out of the box. In fact, snapping the case on is fairly intuitive as well. If you view the case only from the back, it’s actually not that bad, albeit a little bulky for sure.

z fold 3 case side view with thickness

The textured material adds some grip to the Z Fold 3, which is nice for such an expensive device. You also get a sleeve for storing the S Pen, which is detachable should you want to use the S Pen without the case. All of these things sound great, so what’s the problem?

The issue lies with the front cover and the extra width needed for the S pen slot.

Cover Display issues

z fold 3 case peek view

My biggest concern is that the front of the flip cover will not close properly to fully protect the cover display on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. You can try to carefully slide the case over the edge of the phone’s cover screen, but it snaps back to a position where a small sliver of the screen remains exposed. The only way to keep the flip cover properly in place is to hold it there with your hand, obviously not practical or ideal on a daily basis. Some Reddit users mockingly suggested using a rubber band to hold the flip cover in place, which is an indication of the shortcoming of this $80 case. Surely Samsung could have engineered a better solution here? They made a really good pair of foldables after all, so this case is perplexing.

Folding the cover back reveals additional usability problems. When using the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s cover display, the flip cover adds considerable bulk and makes using the phone difficult when folded back. The edge of the cover is so wide that it protrudes from the rear of Fold 3’s cover display. One of the primary appeals of the cover display on the Z Fold 3 is for one-handed use, which this Flip cover makes very difficult.

z fold 3 case cover folded back

Unfolded issues

If you decide to unfold your Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Flip Cover with S Pen continues to make using the phone more difficult. The left edge of this case now sticks out from the left side of the Z Fold 3, making it incredibly difficult to use the phone, even with two hands! If you have a dominant left hand, single-hand use is practically impossible.

I would contend that this inconvenience takes away the appeal of having the S Pen stowed in the case. It’s awfully difficult to write with the S Pen in the unfolded orientation because you need to balance the case awkwardly in your other hand. The Flip Cover with S Pen also does not lay flat on a desk or table, so you can’t put it down to use the S Pen more reliably.

z fold 3 case unfolded and folded back

I’ve used a lot of Samsung cases over the years, for almost every flagship they’ve released. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 Flip Cover with S Pen is one of the worst designs I’ve ever seen. After using this case for a few days, my best advice is to remove the detachable S Pen silo and throw the case in the trash. You can find other better uses for your $80.

If you do need a case, these are some of the Best Galaxy Z Fold 3 cases, and we’ll be adding some S Pen storage cases as soon as we spot some good ones.

Kourtney Kardashian shares Bible verse amid Scott Disick, Travis Barker drama - Page Six

Taking the holy road.

Kourtney Kardashian is turning to the Bible after Scott Disick allegedly told another one of her ex-boyfriends that her PDA with Travis Barker was too much.

The “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star, 42, tweeted Tuesday, “John 15:7. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask anything you wish, and it will be done for you.”

Kardashian’s post came just hours after Younes Bendjima, whom she dated from 2016 to 2018, leaked an alleged DM from Disick, who apparently wanted to vent about their mutual ex’s new relationship.

“Yo is this chick ok!???? Broooo like what is this. In the middle of Italy,” the “Flip It Like Disick” star, 38, purportedly wrote to Bendjima, 28, alongside a paparazzi photo of Kardashian straddling Barker, 45, on a boat in Italy.

“Doesn’t matter to me as long as she’s happy,” Bendjima responded. “PS: i aint your bro.”

He captioned the screenshot, “keep the same energy you had about me publicly, privately.”

Barker, for his part, seemed unbothered by the alleged DMs. The Blink-182 drummer, 45, shared a meme to his Instagram Story Tuesday that showed Ray Liotta laughing in “Goodfellas.” He didn’t bother to caption the post, but fans took it as his response.

Kardashian and Disick’s on-again, off-again relationship began in 2006 and ended in 2015. They share three children: Mason, 11, Penelope, 9, and Reign, 6.

Kardashian and Barker went public with their romance in January, just over two years after her split from Bendjima.

While Disick is seemingly salty about Barker now, he gave Kardashian his blessing to date the musician in June during the “KUWTK” reunion.

“I think if you really love somebody right, you want them to be happy no matter what,” Disick told Andy Cohen at the time. “So, I do give her a blessing to be happy.”

The four postponed dates — September 1st in Clarkston, Michigan; September 2nd in Dayton, Ohio; September 4th in Tinley Park, Illinois; and September 5th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin — will be rescheduled and previously purchased tickets will be honored at the new dates. An updated itinerary will be announced soon, and more information will be emailed to ticket holders directly.

Simmons’ positive Covid test comes just days after singer Paul Stanley also caught the virus, forcing the band to postpone shows in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia. At the time, Kiss said in a statement that their entire band and crew are “fully vaccinated,” and that everyone has “operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows.”

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Simmons urged fans to get vaccinated against Covid-19, saying, “I would highly recommend for everybody to get two Pfizer or Moderna shots, please — for the rest of us. Even if you believe the Earth is flat, it’s not.”

KISS's GENE SIMMONS Tests Positive For COVID-19; Four More Concerts Postponed

Gene Simmons has tested positive for COVID-19.

The KISS bassist/vocalist's diagnosis comes less than a week after his bandmate Paul Stanley revealed that he had also contracted the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, forcing the postponement of three shows on the group's "End Of The Road" farewell tour.

Earlier today (Tuesday, August 31), KISS released the following statement: "KISS will postpone their next four tour dates. While Paul Stanley recently tweeted that he has recovered from COVID, Gene Simmons has now tested positive and is experiencing mild symptoms. The band and crew will remain at home and isolate for the next 10 days and doctors have indicated the tour should be able to resume on September 9th at FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA. All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates once announced. More information will be emailed to ticketholders directly."

Postponed shows:

Aug. 26 - Burgettstown, PA @ The Pavilion at Star Lake
Aug. 28 - Raleigh, NC @ Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek
Aug. 29 - Atlanta, GA @ Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood
Sep. 01 - Clarkston, MI @ DTE Energy Music Theatre
Sep. 02 - Dayton, OH @ Wright State University Nutter Center
Sep. 04 - Tinley Park, IL @ Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre
Sep. 05 - Milwaukee, WI @ American Family Insurance Amphitheater - Summerfest Grounds

When Stanley first tested positive last Thursday, KISS said the whole band and the crew members who are traveling with them on the tour are fully vaccinated.

Members of KISS "and their crew have operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows," the band wrote in the statement.

"The tour also has a COVID safety protocol officer on staff full-time that is ensuring everyone is closely following all CDC guidelines," the statement continued.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Simmons urged fans to get vaccinated against COVID-19, saying: "I would highly recommend for everybody to get two Pfizer or Moderna shots, please — for the rest of us. Even if you believe the Earth is flat, it's not."

KISS kicked off the summer 2021 leg of its "End Of The Road" farewell tour on August 18 at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts. The concert marked the band's first full-length live appearance in front of an audience since March 2020.

KISS's farewell trek was launched in January 2019 and was originally scheduled to conclude on July 17, 2021 in New York City but is now expected to last well into 2022.

KISS's current lineup consists of original members Stanley and Simmons, alongside later band additions, guitarist Tommy Thayer (since 2002) and drummer Eric Singer (on and off since 1991).

Formed in 1973 by Stanley, Simmons, Peter Criss (drums) and Ace Frehley (guitar), KISS staged its first "farewell" tour in 2000, the last to feature the group's original lineup.

Mike Richards Fired as Executive Producer of ‘Jeopardy!’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’ - Variety

Sony has fired Mike Richards as the executive producer of “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune.” Michael Davies, the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” executive producer whose Embassy Row shingle is based at Sony, will take over production duties in the interim.

The news was announced by Suzanne Prete, executive vice president, business and strategy, “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!” in a memo to staff. Prete said she would be also be taking a more active day-to-day role on the shows moving forward.

Richards’ exit comes a little more than a week after he was forced to step down as “Jeopardy!” host, just nine days after he was tapped to succeed the legendary Alex Trebek as the face of the beloved quiz show.

“We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at ‘Jeopardy!’ it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks,” Prete said in her note. “That clearly has not happened.”

Richards gave up the job as host after ugly statements that he had made on an eight-year-old podcast series resurface, and that followed concerns over the host selection process — with whispers that Richards, as host, was able to calibrate the search to replace Trebek in his favor. And it also came following the unearthing of discrimination lawsuits that multiple models working on “Price Is Right,” which he had produced at the time, filed in 2010 and 2011.

After Richards gave up the host chair, Sony voiced support for him remaining in his role as executive producer. “Mike has been with us for the last two years and has led the ‘Jeopardy!’ team through the most challenging time the show has ever experienced. It is our hope that as EP he will continue to do so with professionalism and respect,” Sony said at the time.

But morale was said to be low on both shows, even before the recent hosting debacle, and clearly the events of the past few weeks had made things untenable on the sets of both shows — but particularly “Jeopardy.” (According to one insider, “Wheel of Fortune” staffers had felt completely in the dark in recent weeks as to what was happening and who was running the ship.)

The five episodes that Richards shot in his first and only day as “Jeopardy!” permanent host were scheduled to start off the new season on Sept. 13; it’s unclear if that will change now that he is also no longer EP.

Richards took over as executive producer on both “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!” in 2020, after the exit of longtime executive producer Harry Friedman, who announced in August 2019 that he would be stepping down when his contract expired. Friedman had run “Wheel of Fortune” since 1995 and “Jeopardy!” since 1997.

The succession plan came into view in 2019, when Richards stepped down from his roles as executive producer of both “The Price Is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal” and signing a multi-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television. Besides being a producer, Richards has hosted several shows over the years including “Beauty and the Geek,” “Divided” and “The Pyramid.”

Richards took over during “Jeopardy!” during a difficult period for the show, given Trebek’s illness and death, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on producing a studio-based show. He helped oversee the initial process in replacing Trebek, but made a point to step down as part of the process after throwing his hat in the ring for the job.

Richards was named permanent host on Aug. 11, six days after Variety reported he was in advanced negotiations for the coveted job. Simultaneously, previous guest host Mayim Bialik was named the host of “Jeopardy!” primetime specials and a spinoff series; she was later tapped to again fill in as guest host on the daytime “Jeopardy!” following Richards’ ouster as host; a round of other guest hosts are expected to sit in for the foreseeable future as another search for Trebek’s permanent replacement gets back underway.

It’s unclear if Davies might be in line to permanently take over as EP of “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune,” but he’s based in New York, where he produces a wide variety of unscripted series like “Millionaire” and talk shows such as “Watch What Happens Live.” Embassy Row is also ramping up its stable of podcasts. Additionally, Davies is a soccer pundit through the “Men in Blazers” television show, podcast, and digital brand, which he co-hosts and runs with Roger Bennett.

The following was just sent to “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” staff from Prete:

I’m writing to let you know that Mike will no longer be serving as EP of Wheel and Jeopardy! effective immediately. We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at Jeopardy! it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks. That clearly has not happened.

Michael Davies from Embassy Row has agreed to help with production on an interim basis until further notice. Michael and I will work together with all of you in the weeks ahead to ensure that production remains on schedule and we do not miss a beat as we head into the new season.

I know this has been a challenging time for the entire team, and I want to thank you all for your cooperation and professionalism over these last few weeks. As Ravi mentioned last week, I will be more involved in the day-to-day on our shows moving forward and I am looking forward to working closely with all of you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything.

Sincerely,
Suzanne

Jennifer Lopez accidentally leaves price tag on Dolce & Gabbana cape - Page Six

Jennifer Lopez’s love may not cost a thing, but her cape sure comes with a price tag.

The multi-hyphenate, 52, attended Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda show in Venice on Sunday, where she suffered a slight wardrobe malfunction.

For the star-studded show, Lopez teamed an ornate floral cape with high-waisted trousers and a bra top, all by the Italian designers.

She accessorized with an embellished gold crown and heels, ensuring that her ensemble sparkled from top to toe.

However, when the wind billowed the star’s cape, it became clear that she’d forgotten to remove the price tag inside it.

While the cape — part of Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall 2019 runway collection — was likely on loan to Lopez for the show, eagle-eyed Twitter users still called out the fashion faux pas.

“Minnie Pearl is THAT you ???? LOL,” one tweeted, while another wrote, “I knew she was like the rest of us.”

Others defended the style snafu, adding, “Jlo and dress was [sic] very beautiful even though the price tag was there.”

Lopez isn’t the only star to suffer a similar slip-up, as Megan Markle left a price tag dangling from her dress in 2018.

The “In the Morning” singer was in good company at the couture show, which included a performance by Jennifer Hudson and was attended by guests including Helen MirrenKourtney Kardashian, Megan Thee Stallion, Normani, Zoe Saldana, Vanessa Bryant, Bebe Rexha, Vin Diesel and more.

Even the runway was filled with star power, as celebrity kids including Sean “Diddy” Combs’ daughters and Heidi Klum’s daughter Leni strutted down the catwalk in St. Mark’s Square.

Apple Watch Series 7 reportedly facing production delays due to complex redesign - 9to5Mac

We’re anxiously waiting for Apple to announce the next iPhone event, but there’s news out of Nikkei Asia that could prove disappointing for Apple Watch customers. Citing sources familiar with Apple Watch Series 7 production, the outlet reports that the redesigned hardware (renders pictured above) is causing production delays ahead of launch. Apple typically releases major new updates to the Apple Watch in September (save for last year’s slight delay due to COVID).

Here’s what Nikkei has to say on the eve of September:

Production of the upcoming Apple Watch has been delayed in large part due to the complicated designs of the new smartwatch, Nikkei Asia has learned.

Manufacturers of Apple Watch 7, as the device is expected to be called, began small-scale production last week but encountered critical challenges in reaching satisfactory production performance, multiple people familiar with the situation said.

Three sources said the current disappointing production quality could be attributed to the complexity of design, which is significantly different from that of previous generations of the watch, and the assemblers found issues when putting together electronics modules, components and displays.

While it’s wild to think that Apple Watch Series 7 production only began in earnest last week, Apple does tend to crank up iPhone and Apple Watch production in August before a late September launch.

While it’s not stated in the report, it’s possible that this could mean the Apple Watch Series 7 is released after the iPhone 13. Apple has historically released updates to the Apple Watch alongside new iPhones. It’s also possible that supply could be severely constrained at launch for the redesigned model.

Nikkei goes on to say that production has actually been halted for the Apple Watch Series 7.

As a result, the production of the new watch has been temporarily halted as Apple and its suppliers try to sort out the problems and further certify the designs before going into mass production, four people said.

The next Apple Watch will come with new features such as blood pressure measurement, they said, which means production involves fitting a greater number of components into a similar size body. The new product must also meet requirements for water-resistance performance, further increasing the engineering and production challenges, the people said.

The new Apple Watch design is expected to dramatically change the shape of the casing to more align with the iPhone 12 and iPad Pro look. Apple’s latest devices including the newly designed iMac and rumored MacBook Pro update use a boxier design than the curved Apple Watches so far.

The display is also expected to be bumped slightly, possibly thanks to thinner bezels, with 40mm and 44mm becoming 41mm and 45mm, respectively.

Nikkei includes ongoing travel restrictions intended to limit the spread of COVID-19 as another factor cited by sources.

However, disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for Apple and its suppliers to travel back and forth to verify the new specifications, making it hard to discover difficulties with the design until test production starts, two of the people said.

On a positive note, Nikkei includes in its reporting that the Apple Watch Series 7 is expected to debut blood pressure measurement functionality and a stronger water resistance rating.

Apple is expected to announce the annual iPhone event where Apple Watch is unveiled for a date as soon as September 14. The announcement could come on September 7 if rumors pan out this year.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 Is Way More Durable Than Its Predecessors - Gizmodo

Image for article titled The Galaxy Z Fold 3 Is Way More Durable Than Its Predecessors
Photo: Sam Rutherford

When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 3, it made a point of emphasizing its improved durability. It’s far, far too early to know how the Z Fold 3 will hold up over time, but in a series of breakability tests, it seems Samsung’s durability claims aren’t just fluffy marketing.

Allstate Protection Plans (formerly SquareTrade) is infamous for its drop tests and its FoldBot. While we don’t know the final results of the FoldBot just yet, Allstate said “it proved to be extremely strong” and that there were few doubts that it would last 200,000 folds. The Z Fold 3 did, however, make serious strides in two drop tests and a dunk in the pool.

As a refresher, with the Z Fold 3, Samsung said it created a stronger frame with a material it dubs Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus. It also has an IPX8 rating, making it the first Samsung foldable to offer any sort of water resistance. The main screen also has an additional panel layer and a better protective film, which Samsung says makes the Z Fold 3's screen 80% more durable than the Z Fold 2.

These are pretty big claims, but the results of Allstate’s breakability tests are encouraging. You can watch the video for yourself, but the DropBot dropped the $1,800 Z Fold 3 from six feet onto concrete. In the two drops where the phone was fully open, the screen didn’t shatter—a first for any smartphone. It only received minor pixel damage and scuffing. It didn’t fare so well when the phone was closed, however. In that test, the screen shattered with bits of glass coming loose. As for water resistance, the phone survived a 5-foot dunk in the pool for 30 minutes—which is exactly what its IPX8 rating promised.

Samsung has made significant strides in the durability of foldable phones since it first introduced the Galaxy Fold in 2019. “The Galaxy Z Fold3 is one of the toughest, most durable phones we’ve ever tested, and its interior screen is the first not to crack or shatter in our drop test,” Jason Siciliano, Allstate Protection Plan vice president of marketing and creative director, said in a statement.

This is an encouraging sign that Samsung’s latest foldable flagship should be able to better withstand the rough and tumble of daily life. However, these tests aren’t exactly a 1:1 mirror of how people actually handle their phones. (I don’t know about you, but I don’t climb up 6ft on a ladder and just... drop my phone face-down.) We also won’t know what sort of issues might pop up after months of long-term use. For instance, when we tested the Z Fold 2, we found that the screen became increasingly susceptible to tiny air bubbles over several months of daily use.

Also, improved durability doesn’t mean these phones are indestructible. Not only does the phone itself cost $1,800 to buy, but it also costs $479 to repair the main screen and $149 to repair the outer screen. So, uh, if you’re prone to accidents, you might still want to invest in a case.

Mike Richards Out As EP On ‘Jeopardy!’ & ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ - Deadline

Mike Richards is out as executive producer of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.

Sony Pictures Television just told staff. See the full note below.

It comes after a turbulent few weeks for the long-running syndicated program, which saw Richards, who joined Jeopardy! as exec producer in 2020, ousted as host after one day of production.

Suzanne Prete, EVP, Business and Strategy, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, just sent an internal note to staff on these shows explaining that Richards would depart effective immediately with Embassy Row’s Michael Davies agreeing to help on an interim basis.

She said that they hoped that Richards exiting as host would have “minimized the disruption and internal difficulties” that they experienced over the last few weeks, but added that “clearly has not happened.”

Deadline understands that given all that has transpired over the last few weeks, it was clear that Richards’ position as EP has been too compromised for him to effectively continue in that role. It’s thought that given he doesn’t have the internal or external support that he needs to lead the team, his exit was in the best interests of the show.

Watch on Deadline

Richards stepped down as host earlier this month following a Ringer report about insensitive and sexist comments Richards had made towards his female co-hosts and guests on The Randumb Show, a podcast he hosted in 2013 and 2014, along with off-color remarks about Haitians and Jews.

Last week, the staff and crew of the venerable game show were summoned for a Microsoft Teams meeting this morning, sources told Deadline. Richards apologized to his staff for the comments and addressed his team during the meeting, which was attended by Sony’s top TV executive, Ravi Ahuja, Chairman of Sony Global Television Studios, who oversees the studio’s gameshow franchises and was in charge of the search for a permanent Jeopardy! host following the death of Alex Trebek. A similar virtual meeting was held with the staff of Sony’s Wheel of Fortune, which Richards also executive produces.

During this meeting, the studio confirmed that he would continue as executive producer. Yet, multiple Jeopardy! staffers who attended the meeting said that they had expected for him to step down as EP as the show is restarting the search for a permanent host.

Mayim Bialik, named earlier this month as host of the Jeopardy! primetime and spinoff series, will fill in as host of the mothership syndicated program for at least the next three weeks.

See the full note below:

Dear Team,

I’m writing to let you know that Mike will no longer be serving as EP of Wheel and Jeopardy! effective immediately.  We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at Jeopardy! it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks.
