MF DOOM, Intricate And Enigmatic Rapper And Producer, Dead At 49 - NPR

Daniel Dumile, the rapper and producer best known as MF DOOM, died Oct. 31, 2020, according to a message posted on his Instagram account by his wife Jasmine Dumile on Dec. 31. No cause of death was given. He was 49 years old.

Jasmine Dumile's post reads:

Begin all things by giving thanks to THE ALL!

To Dumile

The greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for. Thank you for all the things you have shown, taught and given to me, our children and our family. Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off. Thank you for showing how not to be afraid to love and be the best person I could ever be. My world will never be the same without you. Words will never express what you and Malachi mean to me, I love both and adore you always. May THE ALL continue to bless you, our family and the planet.

Born Jan. 9, 1971 in London and raised on Long Island, N.Y., Dumile first rapped under the alias Zev Love X with the group KMD in the late '80s. The group released two albums: 1991's Mr. Hood and Black Bastards, which was completed in 1993 but was not released until 2001. Hip-hop journalist Andrew Nosnitsky called the latter "a rare lost masterpiece. "

Inspired by the Marvel character Dr. Doom, he rechristened himself MF DOOM and released the self-produced Operation: Doomsday in 1999. He spit bars with playful and twisted intricacy, grounded by his own classic soul- and funk-sampling production.

YouTube

In the 2000s, several more solo records (the instrumental Special Herbs series, 2004's MM..FOOD and 2009's Born Like This), collaborations (Madvillainy with Madlib, The Mouse and the Mask with Danger Mouse) and additional aliases (among them, Viktor Vaughn and King Geedorah) quickly followed, spun from a seemingly limitless creative mind. He also produced tracks for Ghostface Killah and MF Grimm.

Like the comic-book characters he emulated, MF DOOM disguised his identity by performing behind a mask.

"It's really just another character," he told writer David Ma around the release of 2009's Born Like This. "Zev Love X was a character too, most people think that's me but he wasn't. They've all been characters. The DOOM thing is to be able to come at things with a different point of view. I decided the mask would just add to the mystique of the character as well as make DOOM stand out. I though it'd be an easy way for people to see and differentiate between characters, sorta like when an actor gains weight for a role. Throwing on the mask was just a good way to switch it up."

But mostly, as he told Day to Day in 2003, "The music first, then everything else. You won't see me on the cover of an album with tattoos or a big gold chain; none of that."

MF DOOM returned to London in 2010, explaining to The Guardian, "I spent 35 years growing up in the U.S., and it had its ups and downs, but this is a new place for me. I have no friends here apart from the dudes at my record label, and I didn't go to school with no one. Nobody knows me – I'm incognito. It's all new, all fun."

His output continued, but at a slower pace. MF DOOM released Key to the Kuffs as JJ DOOM, with producer Jneiro Jarel providing a far more spacious palette for DOOM to stretch out. But in collaborations with Bishop Nehru, Czarface and Westside Gunn, you heard sparring partners in awe of the master, as old sparks found new sounds.

Upon the announcement of his death, tributes from peers and admirers poured in. Posting an image from 2004's Madvillainy, Flying Lotus wrote, "All u ever needed in hip hop was this record. Sorted. Done. Give it to the f****** aliens."

Kenny Beats, a producer indebted to MF DOOM's idiosyncratic boom-bap style, tweeted: "I heard that some authors rewrote entire novels by the greats just to see how it felt. Denzel [Curry] and I made UNLOCKED talking about DOOM every single day just trying to channel an ounce of the feeling."

Tyler, The Creator, who flipped out like a fanboy the first time he met MF DOOM, kept it simple: "safe travels villain."

How to make and share your Instagram Top 9 posts of 2020 - New York Post

In this digital era, the end of the year remains a prime time for reflection — only now we can get virtual assistance to help us remember what the best parts of the last 12 months were.

The Instagram Top 9 is perhaps the best-known year-end roundup tradition, in which people use tech to see which of their Instagram posts got the most likes during the past year and then share that data in grid form.

While the practice of publishing report screenshots to one’s Insta profile is a dated practice from “the olden days,” as Mashable puts it, the last days of more recent years have still seen plenty of them posted on Instagram Stories.

Want to know how to do your own Top 9? Here’s how to make it happen before we ring in the new year.

Choose between Top Nine and Best Nine

Both of these free sites serve solely to determine and format your most popular posts. Top Nine is available as both a website and an app, the latter not requiring an email address. Best Nine — which is only usable for public accounts — is only a site and functions significantly more slowly. (“Please note that now it takes like 10 minutes to complete your request due to a huge demand,” the site warns.)

Type your handle and wait

Simply type it in and submit it when prompted on either site.

Save and share

Top Nine offers a “Save & Share” button to easily post the grid-based report to your Instagram Story. For those who’d rather upload it manually, just save or screenshot the image to your phone’s camera roll, then open Instagram and upload the image into a Story.

Voila! While 2020 likely wasn’t the most photogenic year in lived memory for many, we made it through and it’s nonetheless worth recalling the highlights (and perhaps leaving the lowlights behind).

MF Doom, masked rapper known for complex lyrics, dies at 49 - Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — MF Doom, a masked rapper who awed hip-hop fans and fellow musicians with intricate wordplay, has died. He was 49.

The British-born rapper rarely appeared in public in recent years without his signature mask, modeled after the Marvel Comics villain Doctor Doom. His death was confirmed Thursday by Doom’s representative, Richie Abbott. Jasmine Dumile said in a statement that her husband — whose real name is Daniel Dumile — died Oct. 31.

The cause of death has not been released.

Jasmine Dumile posted a photo of the rapper and a heartfelt message on his Instagram pag e. She called him the “greatest husband” and father and thanked him for showing her how not to be “afraid to love.”

“Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off,” she wrote. “My world will never be the same without you.”

Dumile was born in London and raised in New York. He began his rap career in the late 1980s under the name Zev Love X as part of the group KMD, which included his younger brother DJ Subroc.

The group released two albums: “Mr. Hood” in 1991 and “Black Bastards” two years later. Subroc died shortly before the release of the second album.

Dumile took a step back from the public eye, then returned in the late 1990s under his MF Doom persona. In 1999, he released his self-produced debut album “Operation: Doomsday.”

Dumile released six studio albums under different stage names, including King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn. He collaborated with producer Madlib on the 2004 album “Madvillainy,” which was considered his most celebrated release.

Dumile’s last solo studio album, “Born Like This,” was released in 2009. His most recent album was a 2018 collaboration with the group Czarface: “Czarface Meets Metal Face.”

Dumile’s death, three years after the death of his 14-year-old son, shocked the hip-hop world. “Someone just stabbed all my chakras,” rapper Pharoahe Monch wrote on Instagram. “I’m angry. I’m hollering and I’m crying.”

“RIP to another Giant your favorite MC’s MC .. MF DOOM!! crushing news...,” producer and rapper Q-Tip wrote on social media.

Music industry executive Dante Ross, who signed KMD to its first record deal, said Dumile’s “life force was a metaphor for black men in this world. You took all the (bad things) sent your way and created beautiful art with it. Tragedy was your fuel for reinvention.”

Behind the theatrics of the mask was a technically proficient lyricist. With a monotone delivery that concealed deceptively complex lyrics and rhyme schemes, Doom evolved into a wordsmith that hip-hop’s top lyricists deeply admired. Each verse could require multiple listens to decipher the hidden or multiple meanings of words.

In an interview last year with Spin magazine, Dumile compared his songwriting to “gymnastics on paper” and achieving “triple word scores” in Scrabble.

“How many words repeat in a bar, or two bars? How many syllables can you use that still make sense in a song?” Dumile said. “The quality of the rhyming word: phonetically, how the tone is, in the pronunciation of the word. Regardless of language ... As long as the word itself rhymes, you still get points for that word. ... How many references can you cross and still stay on topic? And still rhyme? The more complex the subject matter and wordplay is, that’s where you get your points. I’m a rhymer, so I go for points.”

Bidens honor frontline workers in NYE address: 'We owe them, we owe them, we owe them' | TheHill - The Hill

President-elect Joe BidenJoe BidenTrump to cut Florida trip short, return to Washington on Thursday Intel vice chair says government agency cyber attack 'may have started earlier' Trump administration declassifies unconfirmed intelligence on China bounties on US forces in Afghanistan: report MORE and his wife Dr. Jill Biden honored frontline workers in a New Year's Eve address Thursday during ABC's "New Year’s Rockin’ Eve" broadcast from Times Square.

The program's host Ryan Seacrest asked Biden and the future first lady what they would like to say to frontline workers present in New York City and around the nation who have worked to battle the coronavirus pandemic this year.

“My mother used to have an expression," Biden said. “Bravery resides in every heart and someday it’ll be summoned. [In] the people we're honoring tonight, it was summoned and they stepped up and they're brave, they did so much,” the president-elect said to Seacrest.

“They risked their lives, they've done so much for us and we owe them, we owe them, we owe them," added Biden.

"We're so grateful for everything they did. You know, they left their families and their homes so that we could be safe and I — all Americans truly appreciate what they did for us," added Jill Biden.

Health care workers have consistently been at the forefront pandemic, and many nurses, doctors and hospital staff have lost their lives to the disease.

The Bidens' address comes as the coronavirus continues to ravage the United States. The country has recorded over 19 million coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, and over 344,000 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this month approved both the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines for emergency use, and the federal government has worked to administer the vaccines to protect those most at risk including frontline health care workers.

However, it appears that the Trump administration will not achieve its goal of vaccinating 20 million people by the end of 2020.

A Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tracker shows that only about 2 million people have received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine. On Thursday afternoon, Anthony FauciAnthony FauciMore contagious coronavirus variant found in California, governor says US hits new daily high with 3,725 coronavirus deaths Pace of vaccinations falls short of estimates, prompting alerts MORE, the nation's top infectious disease expert said that the vaccine rollout was "disappointing."

Biden himself hit the administration over the vaccine rollout Tuesday, saying that the plan to deliver the vaccines was "falling far behind."

Seacrest asked the president-elect for his hopes ahead of the new year.

"I'm more optimistic about America's chances than I've ever been and I've been around this for a while," said Biden.

"We have the most productive workers in the world. We've now found vaccines that are available, and they're going to work if people can just have to get a better way to getting more out there quicker. I find that we're in a situation where we once again have to step up and make the world and lead the nation."

He added, "Americans can do anything and I am absolutely, positively, confident — confident — we're going to come back and come back even stronger than we were before."

"Things are gonna get better, America," Jill Biden said as their address ended.

"Keep the faith," urged Joe Biden.

Fortnite Season 5 Week 5 Challenge: Where To Dig Up And Bury The Gnomes - Hot Hardware

fortnite gnome
Last week, Fortnite challenges were all about tomatoes. Now in week five of season 5, the challenges have gone to the gnomes, as in the garden variety. Players need to dig up gnomes and bury them around the map to complete the challenges. Why do they need to dig up and then bury them? Who knows? However, we have the locations for you to complete these gnome games and level up your Battlepass.

Dig Up Gnomes

dig challenge

The first gnome challenge for this week is digging up gnomes around the map. Players have to visit Fort Crumpet and Pleasant Park to find glowing mounds of dirt that signify buried gnomes. Then, the piles need to be whacked with a pickaxe for the gnomes to rise out of the ground. After getting all four, you get a cool 20K XP tacked on to your Battlepass.

Collect Gnomes

collect challenge

For this challenge, you will return to Fort Crumpet and visit Holly Hedges to collect gnomes. This is a simple interaction to collect each gnome, but you need to make sure the area is safe. Otherwise, you will be swiftly taken out before completing the quest. If you can get all the gnomes collected, though, you will get another nice 20K XP for your Battlepass.

Bury Gnomes

bury challenge
This challenge may end up being the easiest of the three, as you only need to bury two gnomes rather than dig or collect four. This is another simple interaction task at Pleasant Park or Retail Row, but you should make sure the area is safe before you are taken out while completing the task. After you complete this one, you get another 20K XP for a total of 60K across the three challenges.  That's a pretty nice haul, for just running around and interacting with gnomes.

To find all these challenges and create the maps, we used fortnite.gg, which points exactly where to go. It is a convenient tool if you want to get the challenges done quickly. In any case, completing these gnome challenges are pretty easy considering the total 60K Battlepass XP lift you get from Epic Games. Let us know if you go for the gnomes, and if it was easy or not so easy for you, in the comments below.

How to create and share your Instagram Top 9 year in review - 9to5Mac

It’s New Year’s Eve, so chances are that your Instagram feed is full of people sharing their annual top 9 year-in-review posts. If you’re looking to create and share your own Instagram Top 9 before the end of the year, here’s how to do it.

First things first, it’s rather ridiculous that after years of the Top 9 trend being so incredibly popular, Instagram still hasn’t implemented a native way to create and share the year-in-review directly in the app. Instead, users are forced to rely on third-party applications to create their collages, some of which are less privacy-conscious than others.

Nonetheless, the Top 9 trend is back in full force for 2020. As you’ve scrolled through your Instagram feed this week, you’ve likely seen Top 9 posts from friends and celebrities. The idea is that these recaps break down your top 9 Instagram posts in terms of likes for the year.

How to create your Instagram Top 9

Because Instagram has not launched a native way to create your Top 9, there are a handful of third-party applications to fill the void. The most popular way to create and share your Instagram Top 9 this year is with the rather aptly named Top Nine for Instagram app from the App Store.

The app will ask you for your Instagram username. Enter it and select “continue.” Next, the app will ask you for your email address. If you have a dedicated “junk” email address, I would suggest using that one here (or you can enter something completely random).

After you’ve entered your email address, the app will generate your Instagram Top 9 grid based on your most liked posts of the year. You’ll see a “Top Nine” watermark over your grid, but you can remove this with a $1.99 in-app purchase if you so desire.

Another solution is the Best Nine app, which is available for free on the App Store as well. It doesn’t ask for your email address and there is no watermark on the final image. The tradeoff, however, is that it’s a rather ad-ridden experience of an app.

To share your Top 9 grid to Instagram, tap the “Share” button in either app and save the photo to your Photos library or share it directly to your Instagram. If you save it to your Photos library, you can upload it to Instagram like you would any other image.

One final piece of advice: Be wary of any apps that require you to sign in to your Instagram account. These top 9 images can be generated without that access, as you can see with the services we mentioned above.

Why The Bachelor's Peter Weber Ended Things With Kelley Flanagan After "Stressful" Move - E! NEWS

Alas, a recent bout of turbulence proved too much for Peter Weber and Kelley Flanagan's romance.

The pilot announced on his Instagram on Thursday, Dec. 31 that the pair had called it quits after nine months together. He explained that their relationship was "filled with countless beautiful memories" but that it "simply didn't work out in the end."

The news was particularly startling to fans, given that the season 24 Bachelor had just shared on Dec. 22 that the couple decided to move to New York City together. As it turned out, the transition to the Big Apple exacerbated their issues.

"Peter ultimately was the one who ended it with Kelley, but she 100 percent agreed that they needed time apart," a source tells E! News exclusively. "They had been fighting a lot, and the move was very stressful and put a lot of pressure on them."

According to the insider, the third-place finisher from Hannah Brown's season of The Bachelorette is back on the West Coast to ring in 2021.

Photo of Ben Affleck Juggling Dunkin Donuts Iced Coffees Inspires Wave of 2020 Memes - Newsweek

Social media users are making memes and jokes about the end of a stressful year after seeing recent paparazzi photos of actor Ben Affleck struggling to carry an armload of coffee and food from Dunkin Donuts.

In the photos, the 48-year-old actor steps onto the front porch of a California Pacific Palisades residence and seems to struggle as he tries to retrieve a mailing tube while also carrying at least 3 large iced coffees and a takeout container of donut holes.

Numerous Twitter users have joked about how the image of Affleck struggling to do too many things by himself at home is an illustration of how overwhelmed most Americans have felt during a tumultuous year marked by a pandemic and stay-at-home orders.

@LlamaCrooked wrote, "We got excited about Ben Affleck trending on Twitter. More Batman? Nope! Just a photo that is everyone in 2020 - the look of frustration, confusion, and lack of control! #benaffleck #dunkin"

@pineapplebreads posted the donuts photo and three other images of Affleck looking tired over the past year and wrote, "Ben Affleck as 2020."

@OpenInqueery posted the donuts image and another image of Affleck smoking a cigarette with his face mask pulled above his mouth, and wrote, "Ben Affleck has been me all of 2020 and I love it."

@jangstar97 empathized with the previous comment, posting another image of Affleck smoking and looking exhausted outdoors, and commenting, "my year summed up in two ben affleck photos."

@DoncoEnterprise wrote, "Those pictures of Ben Affleck dropping his Dunkin' Donuts made me laugh harder than anything in recent memory. It's just a perfect depiction of the nightmare that is human life."

Appreciating the photo's humor, @masterwayne___ commented, "Ben Affleck saving the last day of 2020 by simply ordering Dunkin Donuts," and included a short video of a professional-looking woman with an accent in a moving car, closing her laptop, removing her glasses and telling viewers, "You guys are in a crisis. I'm on my way."

@princessbozo wrote, "ben affleck is twitter's sisyphus," a reference to the Greek mythological figure who was punished by the Zeus, king of the Gods, for twice cheating death by being trapped in the underworld and made to endlessly roll a large boulder up a hill, only to have the boulder roll back down the hill for all eternity. Sisyphus has since become a symbol of someone who toils endlessly as a meaningless task.

@alexpardee commented, "I FINALLY have something in common with Ben Affleck."

@dunevillenuve wrote, "cant believe i relate to this picture or ben affleck more than my own family."

@KerithBurke humorously noted, "Not only can Ben Affleck balance a large Dunkin' order, he can make the lower half of his body invisible", a reference to the fact that Affleck's legs in black sweatpants seem to vanish into the black door behind him.

@AdamBlickstein joked, "Ben Affleck orders Dunkin' like he's a contestant on Super Sloppy Double Dare," a reference to the currently non-running Nickelodeon game show involving sloppy "physical challenges" involving food products and messy liquids like water, foam and slime.

@Larakate commented, "I was really sad about NYE being cancelled but the Ben Affleck Dunkin' Donuts memes are nursing my spirit back to health."

@coursxr provided an optimistic wish for the future, stating, "My hope for 2021 is that I experience the joy of loving something as much as Ben Affleck loves Dunkin' Donuts." The Twitter user's image was a collage of numerous times that Affleck has been photographed carrying the company's coffee.

@Hadyn_Smith wasn't as optimistic. "If I had to make a prediction on how 2021 will look like I'd have to pick this picture of Ben Affleck dropping his Dunkin' Donuts", the Twitter user wrote.

@IanFortey took issue with the public's obsession over a relatively mundane celebrity photo amid an ongoing pandemic. "Lemme see here. 83 million infected in a global pandemic, 1.81 million dead in a year...what perfectly sums this up? What image encapsulates this and OH MY GOD IS THAT BEN AFFLECK WITH DUNKIN DONUTS?!?!"

@Miridunn seemed to split the difference, writing, "Ben Affleck is trending bc he dropped some Dunkin Donuts. HE DROPPED SOME DUNKIN DONUTS! That is either the dumbest thing ever that speaks volumes about our pathetic existence & how we deserve everything we get OR it is THE thing we need to see right now. I can't decide."

Newsweek contacted Affleck's agent for comment.

The 9to5Mac Apple Product of the Year: The M1 MacBook Air, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro - 9to5Mac

Apple first unveiled its plans to transition away from Intel processors at WWDC in June, detailing that the first Mac powered by Apple Silicon would be released before the end of the year. As it turns out, Apple released three Macs powered by its new M1 chip: a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini.

Despite Apple having a strong 2020 in nearly all regards, the M1 Mac is what we are officially crowning as the 9to5Mac Product of the Year.

We debated about whether to focus purely on the M1 MacBook Air or to branch out and include the M1 Mac mini and MacBook Pro in the “Product of the Year” category. Ultimately, because all three of these machines are so similar, we decided to focus on the entire family of M1 Macs. This is a monumental shift in the state of the Mac, and even bigger changes are still to come in 2021.

Read on for a round table discussion with the 9to5Mac team on what we love most about the first M1 Macs.

Seth Weintraub, 9to5Mac Founder and Publisher:

M1 MacBook Air

Of all of Apple’s incredible products released this year against the backdrop of the pandemic, the M1 Macs and specifically the M1 MacBook Air changed the game the most. Those working from home now found themselves with beyond desktop-level snappiness in the interoffice envelope-sized fan-less MacBook Air. If that weren’t enough, real battery life went from less than a workday to multiple workdays. Compatibility-wise, Apple knocked it out of the park with almost all but a few edge case apps working out of the box and an almost transparent Rosetta 2 emulator cleaning up the apps still built for Intel.

For me personally, it means I no longer need a pro machine when I’m out and about (which I will someday take advantage of!). And specifically, when I go on ski trips, I no longer need to bring an iMac to get serious work done. I can just leave a big $200 display in both my office and our ski condo and it feels just as snappy. I imagine a lot fewer people will opt for desktop computers in the coming years when all of this power is available in a portable…with no fans!

M1 MacBook Air

Right off the bat, this is the most excited I’ve been about the Mac lineup in years. Additionally, I wasn’t a Mac user during the transition from PowerPC to Intel, so the transition from Intel to Apple Silicon is especially interesting to me.

During the era of the butterfly keyboard, stagnant performance improvements, and a rough transition to USB-C and Thunderbolt 3, it was hard not to feel discouraged about the state of the Mac. Over the last 12 months, all of that has changed and I can now confidently say that I’m hopeful and excited bout the future of the Mac.

I’m using the base model M1 MacBook Air, and it’s the best Mac I’ve used in years. It’s fast, reliable, has stellar battery life, and comes in at under $1000. I upgraded to the M1 MacBook Air from a beefed-up 16-inch MacBook Pro, and the only thing I miss is the larger display.

As such, I fully expect to upgrade to the Apple Silicon-powered 16-inch MacBook Pro, whenever it’s released in 2021. For now, however, the M1 MacBook Air is the best Mac for most people, and the first Mac I feel entirely comfortable recommending to the average consumer in years.

Jeff Benjamin, 9to5 YouTube Lead:

M1 Mac mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro

The M1 Macs are worthy of being crowned product of the year, not only because they have impressive power and are incredibly efficient, those qualities were a given to anyone who’s been paying attention to Apple’s year-over-year silicon advancements. What surprised me, however, is how well Apple was able to make the software work so seamlessly on day one.

The experience hasn’t been without a few hiccups, but by and large, the M1 Macs are a feat when it comes to software compatibility. Right out of the gate, all of the so-called “pro” Mac apps were updated with native universal binaries, and even apps that weren’t designed for Apple silicon ran smoothly thanks to macOS’s impressive Rosetta 2 translation.

Of all products released in 2020 — and it is an impressive lineup if you go back and peruse the entirety of the year’s timeline — the M1 Macs stand alone. Think about it: Apple released three new Macs with an all-new architecture in the middle of a pandemic. That’s amazing to me.

Zac Hall, Space Explored Lead Editor and 9to5Mac Editor Emeritus:

M1 MacBook Air

I bought my first Mac in 2009 when I started college. It was a 2009 13-inch MacBook Pro, and it felt like the future. Three years later, I upgraded to the 13-inch MacBook Air with solid state drive, and it felt like another leap forward.

We’ve seen hardware redesigns, OS evolutions, Retina displays, and even a bizarre butterfly keyboard debacle since then. Still, nothing has been as dramatic and platform-shifting as the debut of the M1 processor. The $999 MacBook Air not only outperforms machines that cost 3x that amount, but it does so with remarkable battery life and a fanless design without compromising on cooling and performance.

The current design even gets a pass since it only debuted in 2018, and the M1 chip is such a leap forward in the overall experience. My biggest wish for a second revision in the future is built-in cellular, you know, like iPads. The MacBook Air is so portable and adaptable that built-in LTE or 5G would be a no-brainer upgrade for me.

Michael Potuck, 9to5Mac Editor:

M1 MacBook Pro

I picked up the base 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro at launch with the plan of replacing my 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro. I was a little hesitant to go for 8GB RAM with the new machine since I had 16GB with my 15-inch. However, I was really curious to see how well the base M1 MacBook Pro could perform.

Over the last two months, I’m stoked to say it runs circles around my 15-inch MacBook Pro. I don’t have really intense daily workflows but I usually run 7 or 8 apps at a time with lots of Safari tabs open and some light photo editing.

The best way I can describe how an Apple Silicon Mac feels is it’s the closest I’ve had a MacBook (or any notebook/desktop) come to moving about as fast as I think. Apps open almost instantly, it’s just so responsive and smooth.

And even Intel apps run impressively well with Rosetta 2 translation making Apple Silicon a no-compromise scenario. I’m super impressed with the first-gen M1 Macs and am very excited to watch the whole Mac family make the transition.

Bradley Chambers, 9to5Mac Contributor and Administrator:

M1 MacBook Air

I’ve been a Mac user since 2005 when I purchased the PowerBook G4. That was the only PowerPC computer I owned as the Intel transition happen a few years later. In my lifetime, I can count on just a handful of technology transitions that have felt like true breakthroughs: Wi-Fi, solid-state drives, and Apple Silicon.

In just a few weeks with the M1 laptop, I can say that I never knew battery life on a laptop could achieve these results while remaining so powerful. For those people that wanted Apple to release a Netbook for ultra-portability, they’ve finally done it. Apple Silicon is as important to Apple’s future as any consumer product they’ve released in their history.

Parker Ortolani, 9to5Mac Contributor:

M1 MacBook Air

No other Apple product improved more this year than the MacBook Air. I’ve been a fan of the Air since Steve first pulled one out of a manila envelope more than a decade ago. But the 2020 M1 MacBook Air is the first version to make no compromises when it comes to performance. It’s the thinnest Mac you can buy and yet it’s now also one of the most powerful. I switched to the new M1 MacBook Air from a 2019 16” MacBook Pro. It seemed like it’d be a radical shift, but I was used to the form factor as I had previously used a 2018 MacBook Air.

They may look the same but they feel worlds apart in day to day use. I feel as though I’ve made no compromises switching to the smaller, lighter, and far more affordable machine. It’s blazing fast and rarely ever has hiccups. I can push it to its limits and not be afraid of getting the dreaded infinitely spinning rainbow beach ball. It’s the first Mac that succeeds in answering the question Steve once pondered while introducing the 2010 MacBook Air, “What would happen if a Mac and an iPad hooked up?”

Stephen Hall, Growth Marketing

Yesterday, I returned my new MacBook Air with Apple’s M1 chip. That might not sound like a resounding endorsement in an article proclaiming it as Apple’s best product of 2020, but it really is. In truth, I came away from it so astounded by its performance that I’m eager to pick up whatever the next version of this silicon will be on Apple’s higher-end Pro laptops — hardware that will presumably bring other features I need (mostly just more USB-C ports, if I’m honest).

I took a look at how the entry-level computer does under load with its measly 8GB RAM around launch time, and the results were astounding to say the least. And after more than a month using the computer, I stand by most of what I said in that article. Even with just 8GB of RAM, I just can’t express enough how pleasant juggling multiple tasks has been on this $999 machine, and performing those tasks feels just as fast in normal use as Apple’s top-of-the-line offerings.

For now, I’m so impressed that I’d rather wait a year or two to get the same Apple Silicon benefits in a machine (M2X?) that’s more in tune with my needs. Oh, and I’m also looking forward to rumored external design modernization coming to the next generation laptops, too. If that’s not you, you should certainly feel confident making the 2020 MacBook Air with Apple Silicon your multi-year laptop commitment. It’s truly an incredible value.

Trevor Daugherty, 9to5Toys Lead Editor:

M1 MacBook Pro and Mac mini

In general, I find myself slow on the uptake when it comes to first-generation tech. When it came to the new MacBooks, I felt that pull to stay put even more given how much I loved my 16-inch MacBook Pro. But the hype eventually wore me down and I couldn’t resist. I now have a 13-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini, both featuring the new M1 silicon. It’s that good. While my daily use may be more limited than some, every app that I use regularly has functioned without issue. First-party software has been flawless and the speed of apps like Pixelmator has been a joy. I can’t remember the last time I was genuinely excited about a new piece of technology.

Blair Altland, 9to5Toys Editor:

M1 Mac mini

The M1 Mac lineup are easily some of the most exciting machines to launch from Apple in years, and the latest Mac mini has proved that for me already. It’s as snappy, powerful, and efficient as all the hype lets on, making its application as a home media server all the more notable in my use case. Rather than taking it for a spin as a daily driver, I’ve had it handling Plex alongside a series of other tasks with impressive results. So if there has ever been a Mac mini geared towards using as a home server, the M1 model is certainly it and far exceeded my initial exceptions.

NYPD releases video it says shows woman attacking Black musician's son after falsely accusing him of stealing her iPhone - CNN

The video was tweeted late Wednesday by NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison, who wrote: "The woman in this video falsely accused an innocent 14-year-old teenager of stealing her cellphone. She then proceeded to physically attack him and fled the location before police officers arrived on scene."
The video includes an image of the woman above the word "Wanted."
The tweet comes days after award-winning jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold posted his own phone video showing the woman making claims against his son on Saturday at the Arlo SoHo boutique hotel.
Police previously told CNN they know the identity of the woman and wanted to speak with her about the incident. The NYPD would not comment on whether she is wanted for questioning or whether charges are forthcoming.
Harrison tweeted the clip with multiple hotel camera angles, showing a woman in a light-colored cap rushing at someone who appears to be Harrison's son in a red cap. The woman grabs him by the waist and the two fall to the floor.
CNN has requested the unedited video from both the NYPD and the Arlo Hotel and both declined to provide a copy.
Harrold and his son are Black and were guests at the hotel in lower Manhattan. The ethnicity of the woman in the video is not clear, although New York police described her as White.
Harrold's video of the encounter has been widely shared on social media, prompting an outcry about what many felt was yet another incident of racial profiling against Black men. The hotel apologized and called the woman's behavior a "baseless accusation, prejudice and assault against an innocent guest."
Harrold said in an Instagram post that he and his son had left their hotel room to get breakfast when they encountered the woman.
The parents of the teenager, Keyon Harrold Jr., and their attorney Ben Crump said Wednesday they were meeting with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. They told CNN's Don Lemon that the DA told them the video is worse than what the father posted on Instagram on Sunday.
The parents and their lawyer contend the incident was a racially motivated, but the NYPD said Tuesday it is not being investigated as a bias crime.
After viewing surveillance video, investigators are considering charging the woman with assault and possibly grand larceny or attempted robbery, Harrison said Tuesday.
The woman's phone was returned to her at the hotel moments after the incident by a ride-share vehicle she used before trying to check in to the hotel, according to Harrison.
The woman has not come forward, but CNN on Tuesday was the first news organization to talk to her by phone. She disputed Harrold's account of what happened.
While the 22-year-old woman claimed she was assaulted during the altercation, CNN hasn't been able to corroborate her account with investigators or with the hotel where the incident took place.
In a 20-minute phone interview in which she acted erratically and was rambling at times, she said the incident unfolded after she first demanded to see the hotel's surveillance video to try to pinpoint who may have taken her phone.
She says she then asked someone else in the hotel lobby to "empty their pocket," before ultimately confronting Keyon Harrold Jr., who she maintained had her phone in his pocket.
"That's when everything got a little bit more serious," the woman said referring to the interaction.
The woman said she would be willing to cooperate, speak with the NYPD and the Harrold family. CNN has made repeated and unsuccessful attempts to contact the woman since Tuesday.

What to Expect From Apple in 2021: New Apple Silicon Macs, iPhone 13, AirTags and More - MacRumors

We're expecting 2021 to be an exciting year for Apple thanks to a renewed focus on the Mac. Apple debuted the first Macs with Apple silicon chip in late 2020, and Apple's M1 chips turned out to be unexpectedly powerful, leaving us looking forward to what's next.

New iMacs and MacBook Pro models are rumored for 2021, with even better Apple silicon chips in the works. We can also count on new iPhone 13 models, the Apple Watch Series 7, updated AirPods, a new Apple TV, and more. We've rounded up all of the products that we're expecting to see from Apple in 2021 based on both current rumors and past release information.

First Half of 2021

Apple is working on multiple new iMac models that have Apple silicon chips, including both high-end and entry-level models. There have been rumors of a redesigned ‌iMac‌ that features an "iPad Pro design language" with thinner bezels and a 23 to 24 inch screen size.

2020 iMac Mockup Feature Blue
This Mac could perhaps be a larger replacement for the current 21.5-inch model, which would likely be around the same physical size as the existing version if Apple greatly cut down on bezel size.

Apple is working on Apple silicon chip designs with as many as 16 high-power cores and four high-efficiency cores, but high-end desktop models could have as many as 32 high-performance cores, perhaps replacing the iMac Pro. Apple is also working on some significant GPU performance improvements.

The new iMacs are expected to be released in spring to fall 2021, so it's possible we're going to see the long-rumored 23 to 24-inch model early in the year, followed by a higher-end model later in the year.

Additional information about the upcoming ‌iMac‌ refresh can be found in our iMac roundup.

AirPods

Apple is working on third-generation ‌AirPods‌ that have a form factor similar to the AirPods Pro, featuring a shorter stem and replaceable silicone ear tips.

AirPods Pro Lite Cool Mint Breeze

While the new ‌AirPods‌ are expected to look like the ‌AirPods Pro‌, the third-generation earbuds will be more affordable and will lack higher-end features such as Active Noise Cancellation. Apple is said to be developing a new wireless chip that could be included in the ‌AirPods‌ 3, and battery life could see improvement.

We don't know much else about the ‌AirPods‌ at this time, but we're expecting them to launch in the first half of 2021, likely in the first quarter.

Our AirPods roundup has more on what we could see from the ‌AirPods‌ in the future.

iPad Pro

There have been persistent rumors suggesting Apple is working on a new version of the 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, with the tablet expected to gain a mini-LED display. Most of the rumors have focused on the 12.9-inch iPad, but it's possible there's also a refreshed 11-inch model in the works too.

iPad Pro Mini LED yellow

Apple's mini-LED displays are expected to use approximately 10,000 LEDs, with each one below 200 microns in size. Mini-LED technology will allow for thinner and lighter product designs that also offer impressive wide color gamut performance, high contrast and HDR, and local dimming, which dims the backlight behind black areas of the screen while keeping bright parts lit for blacker blacks and improved contrast.

There have also been rumors about an OLED ‌iPad Pro‌ in 2021, but it seems unlikely that Apple is going to introduce two new display technologies in the same year, and analysts have suggested an OLED ‌iPad‌ won't be coming until 2022 at the earliest.

Along with a mini-LED display, the updated ‌iPad Pro‌ could include 5G connectivity now that the iPhones have 5G chips, and it is expected to have a more powerful A14X chip that's similar to the chip used in the ‌M1‌ Macs. We've also heard some rumors of a new Apple Pencil in black, but that information has yet to be confirmed.

Production on the mini-LED ‌iPad Pro‌ supposedly began in the fourth quarter of 2020, so this is a product that's likely going to be ready to go early on in the year.

We have more information on the ‌iPad Pro‌ in our dedicated iPad Pro roundup.

June Software Updates

Apple holds the Worldwide Developers Conference every year, and in 2021, we're expecting to see iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8, tvOS 8, and macOS 12.

Apple previously used incremental numbers for macOS updates, but given that we've already had software updates numbered macOS 11.1, we can assume that macOS updates will now go up an entire number similar to iOS updates.

We don't know anything about any of these software updates as of yet, but we should start hearing details in early 2021.

Second Half of 2021

14.1 and 16.1-inch MacBook Pro

Apple is developing redesigned MacBook Pro models that could come in 14.1 and 16.1-inch screen sizes, replacing the existing 13.1 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Now that the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro has an Apple silicon chip, Apple is expected to expand Apple silicon chips to the rest of the MacBook Pro lineup.

14 16 inch MBP Comparison

Both models could have slimmer bezels for more screen real estate. There have been rumors that the new MacBook Pros will have mini-LED displays, which could bring some major improvements in display quality.

‌Mini-LED‌ displays will use approximately 10,000 LEDs, with each one below 200 microns in size. ‌Mini-LED‌ will ultimately allow for thinner and lighter product designs, offering many of the same benefits as OLED like better wide color gamut, high contrast and dynamic range, and local dimming for truer blacks and superior contrast. ‌Mini-LED‌ displays are expensive, so it's possible that the technology will be limited to higher-end models.

Apple is working on new Apple silicon chips to be used in the next-generation notebooks. Some of the chips in development have as many as 16 power cores and four efficiency cores, with Apple also developing 16 and 32-core GPU options.

These new MacBook Pro models are coming in 2021, but we don't know exactly when. We have more information on both the rumored 14-inch MacBook Pro and the rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro in our respective roundups.

iPhone 13

In 2021, we're expecting four ‌iPhone 13‌ models in the same sizes the iPhone 12 models are available in with two 6.1-inch models, a 6.7-inch model, and a 5.4-inch model. Two of those iPhones will be higher-end "Pro" models and two will be more affordable models.

iphone 12 vs iphone 12 mini

Apple is expected to use the same general design, but at least one of the iPhones that's coming could potentially have a portless design with no Lightning port included. Apple has been working toward a portless iPhone and such a device would be limited to charging with Qi-based chargers or a MagSafe charger.

The new iPhones could have 120Hz "ProMotion" displays for smoother performance, along with new camera technology, a faster A15 chip, and an upgraded 5G modem chip from Qualcomm.

There have been a couple rumors indicating Apple is working on iPhones with both Face ID and under-display Touch ID and it's possible 2021 is the year we'll see that dual-biometric technology, but it is early in the rumor cycle so plans could change.

Our iPhone 13 roundup has more detail on what to expect from the new ‌iPhone‌ models coming in 2021.

iPhone SE 'Plus'

Apple introduced a new version of the iPhone SE with an ‌iPhone‌ 8-style design in 2020, and in 2021, we might get a redesigned "Plus" version of the device. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple is working on an "‌iPhone SE‌ Plus" that features a full-screen design, no Face ID, and a ‌Touch ID‌ fingerprint sensor built into the power button on the side of the device.

iPhone SE Cosmopolitan Clean

This design would be similar to the iPad Air design which has an all-display build but without Face ID. The ‌iPad Air‌ instead uses a ‌Touch ID‌ power button. The new device is expected to a 6.1-inch display, dual cameras, and perhaps 5G support, which would also make it similar to the ‌iPhone 12‌. It was initially rumored to be coming in early 2021, but now Kuo believes it will see a launch in the second half of 2021.

Barclays analysts, however, do not believe that Apple has plans to refresh the ‌iPhone SE‌ in the foreseeable future, and display analyst Ross Young has said there won't be an updated version of the ‌iPhone SE‌ until 2022, so it's not guaranteed that we're going to see an ‌iPhone SE‌ this year.

For more on what to expect from the ‌iPhone SE‌ in 2021, we have an iPhone SE roundup with everything we know.

Apple Watch Series 7 and SE 2

Apple introduces new Apple Watch models on a yearly basis, and in 2021, we're expecting the Apple Watch Series 7. We don't know a lot about the Series 7 at this time, but new health functionality is a possibility, as is an Apple Watch design that adopts solid state buttons that don't physically click.

applewatchseries6blue

Apple has been researching a method for non-invasively measuring blood glucose levels, but it's not yet known if this kind of sensor will be included in the 2021 Apple Watch.

Along with the Series 7, there's a chance we could also get a new version of the Apple Watch SE. Apple introduced the ‌Apple Watch SE‌ in 2020 as a lower-cost alternative to the Series 7 that still has mostly modern technology inside.

Higher-End Apple Silicon iMac (Pro?)

As mentioned up above, Apple is working on multiple versions of the ‌iMac‌, including a higher-end model with a more powerful Apple silicon chip. Bloomberg has suggested that Apple will launch new ‌iMac‌ models at different times, so we could see this higher-end model later in the year.

Products With Unknown Release Dates

AirPods Pro

Apple is developing a new version of the ‌AirPods Pro‌ that could feature a more compact design and a new wireless chip. The next-generation version could eliminate the short stem that sticks out from the bottom, resulting in a more rounded shape that's closer in design to competing wire-free earbuds from companies like Google and Samsung.

airpods pro roundup header

Based on hardware leaks, there is a possibility that the ‌AirPods Pro‌ 2 could perhaps come in two sizes, but that has yet to be confirmed.

We have more about the next-generation ‌AirPods Pro‌ in our AirPods Pro roundup.

iPad Mini 6

According to Apple analyst ‌Ming-Chi Kuo‌, Apple is working on a new version of the iPad mini that could measure in at 8.5 to 9 inches, perhaps through a reduction in the bezel size of the current 7.9-inch model.

ipadminitruetone

This model could perhaps include a mini-LED display, as Apple is rumored to be bringing mini-LED technology to several iPads in the ‌iPad‌ lineup. A mini-LED display would allow for a thinner, lighter design without compromising on display quality.

Kuo and other sources have said the ‌iPad mini‌ will come in the first half of 2021, with more details available in our iPad mini roundup.

New Apple TV

The last ‌Apple TV‌ update came in 2017, so it's starting to feel like we're overdue for an update. Luckily, multiple sources have suggested we can expect to see a new model launch in 2021.

apple tv 4k

Rumors suggest the next-generation ‌Apple TV‌ could be equipped with either an A12X Bionic chip or the same A14 chip used in the 2020 iPhones. A higher-powered chip would allow the ‌Apple TV‌ to offer better performance for iOS games.

Next-generation ‌Apple TV‌ models could also have more storage, coming in 64 and 128GB storage options, and there's said to be a new remote control that will be offered alongside it. It could have a Find My feature for locating the remote when it's lost inside the house, and there are also rumors of a U1 chip, something also added to the HomePod mini. Like the ‌HomePod mini‌, the ‌Apple TV‌ serves as a Home Hub, which might be why Apple plans to include a U1 chip.

The U1 chip enables Ultra Wideband support for improved spatial awareness between devices, with the feature allowing the distance between two devices to be calculated through the time it takes for a radio wave to pass between them. It's more accurate than tracking via Bluetooth LE and WiFi and could be used for precise indoor positioning for controlling smarthome devices.

While unconfirmed, there are also some rumors that have suggested Apple could also unveil a higher-end version of the ‌Apple TV‌ that offers console-like performance, with Apple working with developers to bring console-level games to the Apple Arcade service in the future.

Additional details on what to expect from an ‌Apple TV‌ update can be found in our Apple TV roundup.

AirTags

Apple's long-rumored Tile competitor AirTags have been in the works for quite some time, and we don't know when we might be seeing them. ‌AirTags‌ were originally expected in 2020, and there are no rumors on a specific launch timeline.

airtags mockup 4 blue

‌AirTags‌ are small trackers that are equipped with Bluetooth and are designed to attach to important but easily lost items like wallets, cameras, and keys. ‌AirTags‌ (and the items they're attached to) can be tracked right inside the ‌Find My‌ app alongside iPhones, iPads, and Macs, so you can keep an eye on all of your important belongings in one place.

Info about ‌AirTags‌ has been leaking since the release of iOS 13, but we're still not sure what the ‌AirTags‌ will look like. Based on some simple images found in iOS, they could be small, circular tags with built-in Bluetooth and ultra-wideband support. Ultra-wideband, a feature first introduced in the iPhone 11 lineup, is key because iPhones that have a U1 chip will be able to track ‌AirTags‌ with much more accuracy than Bluetooth alone.

If your keys fall down the couch cushion or your wallet gets kicked under the bed, for example, the ‌iPhone‌ will be able to locate the exact part of the room where they're located. This kind of functionality will make ‌AirTags‌ more accurate and more useful than other Bluetooth trackers on the market.

‌AirTags‌ might attach to items with rings or adhesive, and the bottle cap-sized trackers are rumored to come with a keychain that has a leather pouch on it, which may be one of the attachment methods.

There have been mixed rumors on charging methods. One rumor has pointed towards a built-in rechargeable battery that works with an Apple Watch-style charging puck, while another suggests the ‌AirTags‌ will run on a replaceable CR2032 battery. Either way, it sounds like they'll last for a good amount of time rather than featuring a non-replaceable battery.

Anything that you lose will show up on the ‌Find My‌ map with an associated address, and when the ‌iPhone‌ is close to a lost item, you might see an augmented reality map with specific positioning that makes it easier to find the missing item. ‌AirTags‌ will also be able to play a sound when triggered in the ‌Find My‌ app.

With iOS 13, Apple introduced a feature that's designed to let Apple products communicate with one another when offline, letting a lost ‌iPhone‌ ping off of someone else's ‌iPhone‌ it comes into contact with even without a cellular or WiFi connection. This function will likely come to ‌AirTags‌ as well, letting millions of iPhones and Apple devices all around the world track lost items.

We have additional details on ‌AirTags‌ in our full AirTags guide.

Smart Glasses

We know Apple is working on some kind of augmented reality headset or smart glasses, but when this head worn AR product will launch continues to be a mystery.

arglassesyay

There haven't been many augmented reality headset rumors as of late, but there have been rumors targeting launch dates ranging from late 2021 to 2023, so there's a chance we'll see some kind of augmented reality device this year.

Rumors indicate there are two projects in the works that include a set of smart glasses and a separate headset, with the latter device supposedly launching first. The headset is rumored to be similar to Facebook's Oculus Quest, but with a sleeker, lighter weight design.

It's said to include a high-resolution display with built-in cameras, along with technologies like 3D environmental scanning and advanced human detection. Apple is aiming to create an App Store for the headset with a focus on gaming, streaming video content, and video conferencing.

There are a lot of mixed rumors about Apple's AR and VR work given that the company has worked on several different prototypes, and our AR roundup has a great overview of everything we know.

Wrap Up

Apple has quite a few exciting products in the works for 2021 based on what we know so far, and we'll likely see some unexpected surprises as well. Make sure to follow MacRumors.com and the MacRumors roundups over the course of 2021 to keep up with all of the rumors about the upcoming products that Apple has in development through our What to Expect Guide.
