Blackout Tuesday: Why is everyone posting black squares online? - Deseret News

Why is everyone posting black squares on their social media feeds Tuesday? It’s for “Blackout Tuesday,” a day where people are encouraged to disconnect from work to focus on community.

What’s going on:

  • The music industry said Monday that it would choose Tuesday, June 2, to honor “BlackOut Tuesday” — a day to disconnect from the world to honor community.
  • Music industry executives Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang organized the event in reaction to the murders of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and 46-year-old black man George Floyd, who died last week when a white police officer knelt on his neck, which led to a number of protests and riots around the country.
  • The initiative’s website reads: “It is a day to take a beat for an honest, reflective and productive conversation about what actions we need to collectively take to support the Black community. We are tired and can’t change things alone. In the meantime, to our Black friends and family: please take time for you and your mental health. To our allies, the time is now to have difficult conversations with family, friends and colleagues.”

Music artists from across the country honored the day with their own posts:
