As the COVID-19 pandemic halts most summer travel, many are opting for local getaways. This includes the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who are currently on vacation in the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago off England's Cornish coast. The pair decided to take their three kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, on the little trip before school started up again.
The royal family, however, did not choose this vacation destination at random. The Isles hold special significance to Prince William, who traveled there when he was young, along with his parents and brother. Photos from the 1989 trip show Prince Charles, Princess Diana, William, and Harry riding bicycles and exploring the Isles' rocky coastline. It makes sense that William would want to share these memories, and create new ones, with his own children.
In addition, in 2016, Prince William and Duchess Kate took their own trip to the Isles, touring the Tresco Abbey Garden and riding boats along the coast. During that visit, William reminisced on the many great memories he had on the Isles as a child. However, while that trip included official royal visits, this vacation is purely for play.
The Cambridges do indeed seem to be enjoying themselves. The family was spotted biking around the island of Tresco. According to an eye witness who noticed the group, "William and Kate were riding their bicycles, having a laugh. They looked so happy enjoying the weather."
However, like all summer vacations, this one will have to come to an end. The family of five is expected to return to Anmer Hall in Norfolk on Friday, where they've been living during the coronavirus lockdown.
